Pre-med at Northwestern

how hard is it to keep a high GPA for pre-med? and does anyone know the percentage of students who start out pre-med and then switch out? or percentage who apply to med school and make it?

In general, don't major in "pre-med". Pick a major that gives you something else to fall back on if you either 1)change your mind or 2) don't get in right out of college.

well, seeing as you can't major in "pre-med", that eliminates a lot of troubles.

well i know there is no "pre-med" major.. but i'm just wondering how competitive/impossible the classes in the pre-med track are to get through.. especially if you have a major not in the sciences, i.e. something in humanities or business

It is very competitive. Put it together: other pre-meds aiming for their medical school and some in the 5 year med program...their majors are in the sciences...it may bevery impossible to get in and very hard to stay in...

@ ncm85

Make sure you do well in the prerequisites. If you cannot pass courses like Organic Chemistry (it is difficult at NU), then med school might not be right career path for you. Major in something that is easy or related. That will help keep your GPA high for medical school admissions.

yeah, from what I've heard about Organic Chemistry at Northwestern -- it's definitely a 'weeder' class.

I'm curious to know the same thing. I'm not sure if I would be cool with jumping into that class right at the beginning of college, though...

It is a little intimidating...
Maybe the 171 sequence makes more sense?

My nephew is a freshman at NU and his roommate is "premed" taking organic chemistry his freshman year. He was val at his hs and got a 36 on the ACT, but nephew says ALL he studies is org chem. Roommate even dropped his math class the first semester to concentrate on orgo. Don't know how he is doing in it gradewise. My nephew was val of his hs, 2390 SAT (one and only sitting), pres scholar semi, etc. etc. went the normal chem route. Says it was hard but did get an A first and second trimesters.
