@icecrystal2200 - I guess I'm still used to the high school calendar. See everyone in September.

hm i don't actually know if they've made all the decisions. i did get that email he was talking about, though.

"Dear Mariah:

A final decision has been made regarding your application for admission to
Northwestern University. Although you will be receiving your official decision
letter in the mail soon, we want to offer you the option of viewing your
decision online, after 7 pm Central Time tonight, via a secure web site, by
clicking on the link below.

The link sends you to our Applicant Services page. In order to access your
decision, you will be asked for your Application ID code, as well as the e-mail
address you provided on your application. Once you enter this information and
click submit, your admission decision will be displayed.

If you prefer not to receive your decision electronically, simply wait for
your decision letter to arrive in the mail. However, if you would like to see
your decision sooner, visit
https://ugadm.northwestern.edu/application. **Please note that your online
decision will not be available until 7 pm Central Time tonight.**"

Is it safe to assume that if you haven't heard back yet, you probably aren't going to make it?

Adagah, when I called last week they had only just begun to review waitlisted applicants, so these are just the first round of notifications. My friend talked to an admissions officer today who said that some people have already been notified but the bulk of acceptances have yet to go out.

Hmm, well that's good news! Are there any statistics on how many people were waitlisted? I know it was mentioned before that they are accepting a lot of people off the waitlist, but does anybody know how many?

Yes it does, mrchipmunk. I did not get that email either. I really just wish I knew by now if I am in or not. I hate talking to my friends about the school I sent my deposit to (NYU) and having this feeling that it's possible I may not end up there next year. I wish I could at least get excited about NYU and know that that's where I will be. The waiting is awful.

My D got accepted to the biomedical engg program today (long term goal: med school) by email. SAT: R/M/W 680/760/720, rank mid 30s out of a class of 325. She has currently signed up at Case Western, but had written a letter together with her waitlist application to NU.

Any thoughts from you for regarding the choice between these two schools (more for the benefit of the parents)?

What are the ethical considerations on turning down the committed school (or for that matter declining the waitlist offer) other than making the decision quickly?

I am on the waitlist for NU and like your D I sent my deposit to case western. I assuming that your D received merit aid from Case? If so, "for the benefit of the parents" I'd say go to Case. NU in total is 51,000 dollars and if your D plans to go to med school then it may be best to not have loans from undergrad. On the other hand northwestern does allocate a certain percentage of its undergrad graduates for its med school!
Keep in mind that Case's biomedical eng program is one of the best in the country. I think it will come down to if you see college as a long term investment or not. If so, then go to NU because it has a better name. But realistically 20 years from now I think your D will benefit from not having loans from undergrad. I wish you all the luck and Im sure whatever you choose it will work out

So there is no cofusion (I just called the admission office). She said they sent out a complete set of acceptances on friday and they will only go to the waitlist again if a lot of people from friday decline. Congrats to everyone that got in!!

Dad:

Congrats. Just a comment about engineering...it is typically not the easy route to med school -- not that your D wants easy. But, my point is that engineering grades typically are lower than arts & sciences grades. So, for the sake of med school (and parents?), go to the school which will allow her to maximize her gpa, which is paramount for med school...

Another thing to consider is finaid...even if you don't qualify now, if you have two more kids on-deck, you might qualify in future years.

No ethical considerations. Case will understand if you accept NUs offer.
