It's because NU is on quarters. Fall quarter begins in late September and ends before Christmas. Winter and Spring Quarters are after the first of the year. Make sure you have your jobs lined up early.
Yea, from my school, I start about 3 weeks later than everyone else. Closest to NU (once again from my school) is Yale, which is early September, just for comparison.
