I was looking over CAESAR and was wondering about the difference between the two... Is 212 more difficult and which is required for HPME or Pre-Med?

Chem 210 is the class required for HPMEs and Pre-Meds. As for 212, I believe it is for chemistry majors.

ISP students also have to take 212.

And a quick question, are you in HPME? because if you have access to caesar but aren't yet an HPME its not possible to get in the prog.

Yes I'm an HPME, but I believe all students have access... the wildcat welcome pamphlet says that students should "practice" registering for courses

So is Chem 212 the harder course? and both require labs right?

Ok, i just got confused because you asked about HPME and premed, since they're kind of seperate once you matriculate. All students do have access

212 is harder, the focus is different than 210. From what i've been told, 212 doesnt do the mechanisms but focuses on other things (i have no idea what), while 210 does a lot of mechanisms

Both classes do have labs, if i remember correctly 1st quarter, 210 students have lab every other week with a partner, 212 students have it every week without a partner. At least, that's what i observed when i was in the class. I think by the end of the year everyone has lab every week.

Is there a reason you're looking at 212?

i just looked at it, it appears that 210 is accepted as well for chem majors. not sure who would need to take it other than isp students

For Orgo 210, there is no longer any lab during first quarter.

@ jonthelin - that's news to me. i'll check up on it. I do know that the lab instructor will be/is in japan, so perhaps because of that theres no lab first quarter. I will assume that this is just an anomaly for this quarter and i'll let you know what i find out

I was also curious as to how difficult the placement exam for chemistry was? I took the AP Exam Two Years ago and scored a five, should I bone up on chem before i take it?

the chemistry placement test was very difficult for me and I got a 5 on the AP. In my experience, however, the score you get on the placement isn't very important. If you want to take Organic, they will let you.

was the chemistry placement test indicitive of difficulties in orgo because you did not do as well on the placement exam, or did you find yourself in the same positiion as others taking orgo?

I did terribly on the chem placement exam, still did orgo freshman year and got an A fall quarter.

I would only take chem if you think you will do well in it and want a GPA boost as a safety net.

i emailed the lab instructor and this is what he said:
it's because of the way we are restructuring things with the new chem major. All spectroscopy will be taught in the fall and I will also have the students do molecular modeling, but there are no assigned lab days. All labs will be done in the winter and spring, every week.
212 will remain the same as in the past.

I think thats too bad because the first quarter labs are really fun. if you're a bme and they don't change the curric to respond to this, you'll only need to take the first quarter of orgo, which means no labs =[. Though, i do like spectroscopy a good deal

but by having labs every week winter and spring, if you take the full sequence you still get the same number of labs. In the past it was every other week for fall and winter, so now it's just condensed.
