Chance at McCormick

White male from Ohio
GPA 4.125W (very good upward trend, and having a great Senior Year)
Rank 33/328 (May go up after this semester, but the transcript sent has this rank on it)
Senior Courses: Honors Physics, AP Government, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry
ACT 32 (E 32, M 33, R 32, S 31)
SAT II : Math II 800, Chem 790
APs: US History (5)
School is very competitive, we already have 3 kids into Ivy's and I predict at least 6 will go to an Ivy from my class.
Very Rigorous schedule (especially in Maths and Sciences)

Essay: Life changing experience in which I almost died and learned more about myself in the process. I thought it was pretty good.

Teacher Recs: 1 of them is good the other I assume is pretty good, not sure about the councilor rec but I think she did ok.

Work Experience: Plenty of that, spent about 3 years working to save for college including during school.

EC's: really lacking here, I think I wrote down Football for 2 years and Weightlifting in my spare time for 4 years.

Awards: Plenty of district awards, 1 in English and 2 in Mathematics, also Honor Roll and little school awards. As well as a Top 25% on the Financial Literacy Exam.

Hook: I was born in the Former Soviet Union if that helps my chances.

What kind of engineering would you like to do?
As for chances, I would of course apply because you really have nothing to lose, but I do think that your ECs may hurt you. Unless you have a very good reason why you've not been involved in more and you explain this, I'd say that may kill you. .

Well I plan on going into Chemical Engineering or Electrical. My reason is work, I worked pretty much everyday after school till about 9-10 at night from my Sophomore Year till the beginning of my Senior year.

I have to say that's a pretty ridiculous reason for choosing a major. But if you want a comparison, I did about the same thing too in high school, and maybe a little bit later just because I'm a slow but meticulous worker. However, now I find myself consistently working to 2-3am with little interruption.

Does anyone here know if it is true that it is easier for girls to get into engineering schools? Or, in general, how the break-up at NU would be for percent admitted to the different colleges?

I don't think the lack of ECs would hurt you much if you worked a lot (how many hours per week?).

That's a good number of hours. Make sure to market it well though (why you felt you needed to work insted of do other ECs).
