NEW STUDENT WEEK!!!! ALL incoming FRESHMEN read this PLEASE

Hey Fellow Freshies,

I'm at Northwestern this summer participating in the Undegraduate Success in Science (USS) program (yes, sounds dorky, but it's fun). Anyway, we also do leadership/community projects. My group is doing a video for New Student Week on the stress that incoming freshmen face. We will be interviewing upperclassmen as well as experts in the field of stress; don't worry, the video will be entertaining. My question for all of you is:

What burning questions do you have about starting at Northwestern in the fall???

What would you want in this video?

What stresses you out about starting at Northwestern?

Are there questions that you have that upperclassmen can answer? Do you want advice?

Also, anything else you think may be relevant. Please do not hesitate to comment; this is for you (and me). =)

-Reaha

PS - I dont think i can post my email address here, but PM please if you dont want your comments seen.

Everything stresses me out. If you are to cover all my worries, the film is going to be like 3-4 hours.
I would be delighted to hear about the life paths of randomly chosen people who have graduated from NU not long ago.

ditto that, atanas_vs.

...Hmm...an addition, the huge price tag on NU. I know, private school and all, but after buying a laptop with NU's hefty requirements plus tuition plus everything else, I'm starting to think I overestimated...

it seems so petty, but in some sense i feel very much like a high school freshman all over again. Itd be interesting what current students and other new students have to say about finding their niche and fitting in and so on.

Well, I'm not a freshman, but I did have to attend stress management classes AND do counseling at CAPS. That's how bad I was when my grades started to drop a little and felt anxious all the time....

that's a good one, TheCity. finding one's niche, fitting in, facing fears, and overcoming freshman awkwardness are good subjects...

Where do people hang out? Give us an overview of the social scene: bars and clubs, theaters, stuff to do in Chicago and how to get there, sports events, especially football games and tailgating and everything.

LOL. asking about bars and clubs already?

What burning questions do you have about starting at Northwestern in the fall???

mm none really. maybe what classes to take, what to avoid (also which teachers).

What would you want in this video? funny, entertaining social scenes.

What stresses you out about starting at Northwestern? time. i'm afraid i won't have enough time for everything. i thought college scheduling would be nicer, but after looking at how long those labs are, and having to double up in science.. damn.

Are there questions that you have that upperclassmen can answer? Do you want advice?
what's there to do during freshman week? and after that?

Thanks for replying guys. I think we're a little pressed for time for the video, so we're going to make a website. We'd still appreciate coments.

. . .apparantly, NSW is planned a year and a half in advance.

I think you'll find our research on stress and ways to deal with it as well as resources in one place (the website) useful.

Kiwee, I heard a fellow on TV several weeks ago - he was president of Stanford, if I recall correctly. Anyway, he said students learn more from each other than they learn in their classes. If you were accepted to NU, then you were admitted because of what you bring with you and not because of how well you'll be able to edge out the next guy.

If you go into this knowing that you were chosen as an important part of the mix, and looking for what you can learn from, and share with your classmates, I think it will help the stress level. If you look at all the wonderful people around you as potential problems, it will drive you nuts, and you'll miss out on a lot.
