I remember seeing this somewhere, but forgot and cannot seem to find it, but is there a particular due date that you need to send in your app in order to get an interview?
If an interview is not required or recommended there is no point in doing it. At a visit to a top 20 school (not NW) the Director of Admissions said that interviews on campus could be with an admissions counselor or a student, and off-campus could be with an alumni or (get this) a parent......and you could not be sure of which. What possible point could there be in interviewing with a parent? The only reason schools have alumni interviews is to keep the alumni involved and contributing...........they don't pay the slightest attention to them.
I had an alumni interview last month. She told me that she does fill out a form that is submitted in your admissions file. Of course, I have no idea whether admissions officers even consider these forms or not, but the general consensus — gathered from both college guidance books and numerous websites — is that alumni interviews help you rack up brownie points. Don't go out of your way to participate in one (my alumni was in my city).
Believe me, the only brownie points being racked up by alumni interviews is by the school who then has an alumni that thinks their opinion matters and writes a check. It's a farce.
