NYU (Stern School of Business) vs. University of Michigan (Ross School of Business)

Hey guys,
Right now I'm having a hard time making my final decision between NYU and UMich. I am looking to be a business major in marketing/consulting, and maybe a double major with finance.

At NYU, I got into the Stern School of Business along with pre-admit into the World Studies Track.

At UMich, I got into the LSA Honors Program, but I would have to apply freshman year to get into Ross. Although that means I would have to work hard freshman year, LSA Honors students have a general trend of getting admitted into Ross.

I love New York and the City Campus feel of NYU, but I also like the traditional college town feel of UMich. If anyone has any input as to which business school would offer better opportunities or any advice whatsoever it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Congradulations on the acceptances.

Both are great business school but Stern might offer a slight advantage for finance but can't comment on marketing/consulting.

You're internships and opportunities while in school will definetly be easier to obtain at Stern due to proximity, but Umich Ross won't keep you out of anything. It just means that if you want to intern in NYC from Umich you will have to stay here during the summer.

If money is no issue, Its really up to whether you want the traditional experience or the NYC experience.

NYU, save money from interning in NYC in spring and summer rather than in the summer. of course, marketing and consulting is not exclusive to nyc but nyc certainty has a lot. i didnt have much trouble getting an internship myself and im not even in Stern but CAS. I believe it's a better idea also to go to Stern since you not really in Ross and not 100% for sure you will be in Ross. What happens if you mess up in one class and fail to get into Ross. At Stern, you can easily switch majors within Stern and transfer to other NYU colleges.

For marketing/consulting I would definitely recommend Ross. Finance is a different story.

why Ross, what do you do with marketing in a pathetic rural town. who has the experience in that field in small little town. but plenty in NYC.

NYU Stern also has the 3rd highest starting salary for undergraduate business students after UPenn and Notre Dame.

As excited as I am to go to Stern, I don't think we need to do any bashing of UMich. Ann Arbor's actually a great city (total college town) and Ross is a great program. Considering you are looking at a couple of different business majors, perhaps Ross would be good for you because you'll end up getting a BBA --especially if you live in Michigan and are concerned with money.

I'm definitely not discounting Stern though, I'm personally very happy with my decision to get out of Michigan and go to NYU... and you could be, too. But I just want to make sure you consider all of your options. Good luck!

Unfortunately, I don't live in Michigan so tuition for UMich vs. NYU are actually pretty similar. It seems that you live in Michigan. If you don't mind me asking, what made you choose NYU over Michigan?

Academically, I really wanted to opportunity to take advantage of the internships I could do during the school year and I really like the idea of Stern's programs and the community building they do there. Granted, you can get an excellent education at Ross and their dining hall that caters specifically to kids at Ross is incredible... but I think I also like the idea of majoring and not just getting a BBA and doing concentrations. If you are really set on marketing/consulting, I think Ross is stronger than Stern in that area.

In choosing Stern, I knew what I'd be be giving up: the campus, the closeness to home, the tailgating/football games, and pretty much everything I've looked forward to since I was a little kid picking Michigan over State. But think of all you could potentially gain, you'll have the greatest city in the world as your campus.

Personally, though, I had to consider that I should get out of my little suburban bubble and be more independent. In addition, my sister lives in Queens, and I haven't seen her more than three times a year since I was 10, so I particularly want to rectify that.

This'll be a tough decision... I hope you've visited both schools and you pick the one that's right for you come Friday. Good luck! Not gonna lie though, I hope I cross paths with you in the fall.

Or could anyone whose gotten into Stern tell me their credentials? I'd be applying as a transfer student. I am a freshman in college...how would that hurt/ help my chances?

I would definitely choose NYU. I had to make the same choice between Umich and NYU, and I chose NYU and love it here

Go ahead and visit mich though, and see what you feel there.
