Number of People admitted to MT

Hi, I'm auditioning for NYU's Musical Theatre program soon and I'm wondering what the ratio is of how many people that are invited are admitted into the program. Anybody know anything?

As I understand it, Tisch approaches MT with an emphasis on acting and Steinhardt emphasizes the vocal performance aspect. But they are both Musical Theater programs, correct?

Yes, they are- Tisch offers a BFA and Steinhardt offers a Bachelor of Music.

So...are there advantages to receiving one degree over another?
I have seen so much discussion about BA vs BFA, but nothing about a BM degree. Is a BM considered less desireable than a BA or BFA?
As I understand it, a BM degree is similar to a BA, but with Music as the major, rather than one of the other "Arts". Am I correct or can someone clarify this for me?

There is no "edge" in the business of BA vs. BM vs. BFA. It depends on the school, but most that I know, the BM is closer to a BFA than a BA -- it's just that there are more required music classes -- more theory, more piano, etc. Most BM's have a rather minimal number of courses out of the major. Of course, that varies from school to school.

To update the poster's original question:

in 2008, Steinhardt's Vocal Performance program accepted approximately 50 students and hopes to have a class of approx. 25.

I believe that was out of an original 275 or so applicants.

This was discussed at a recent accepted student's program.

Transferring to Steinhardt

I am interested in transferring to Steinhardt, but I was wondering if the Vocal Performance MT program accepted them. I have been able to read a great deal about Tisch's BFA program, but I have been able to find out much less about the Steinhardt BM program. Any response about the BM Vocal Performance in Musical Theatre program would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know details, but I know for sure that there is a girl who is currently in the program who transferred from another school. ( I believe Wagner College.) She attended the Steinhardt summer MT program last year, possibly earning some extra NYU credits before starting in the fall. As for the program itself, everything is pretty clearly outlined on NYU's website. They give you the exact curriculum and classes in the sequence they are to be taken and what credits must be taken outside of the department.

To summarize briefly, students in VP have either a MT or classic concentration. In addition, there is a common core curriculum for all music majors. Also, required courses to meet required courses for the Steinhardt school.
