| throat health actually, my D's voice teacher has forbid her to take any kind of medication for colds, cough, sore throat, allergy, etc. because the ingredients are very drying to the vocal cords (also, dont use anything with menthol in it). the very best thing your son can do for the health of his cords is sleep in a nice steamy room, (my D uses a vaporizor and lots of blankets), avoid airconditioning at all costs, (even in the summer), sit in the bathroom with the water running hot and what my daughter has invented: the hot car. She sits in front of the theatre in a nice sunny spot in her car with the windows rolled up (the car is off of course) and works up a real sweat while she warms up with her vocals for about 10 minutes. I have heard the results--astonishing! |

| Maybe you did meet her, wouldn't that be funny? She is 5'3" though. Her hair IS brown. Lately she has been wearing it very wavy on the long side with side part and side swept bangs. On the "really nice" part, lol....she is very outgoing, verbal, and would be the type to talk enthusiastically and personably to kids who wanted to know more. I don't know how many or if you met any other CAP kids. She just happened to be on crew at ETW's matinee in the same building and came upon the group of kids there auditioning who started to ask her questions and it felt like such a twist to be the one answering after being in your position very recently, let alone is probably younger than you, lol. Having JUST gone through it meant it was fresh in her mind to know what you guys were wanting to know. Plus, she loves the program so much and has learned lots and has had some cool experiences so you were talking to a "happy camper".
If you want to PM or e mail me in case she mentioned her name or some other stuff she may have said, I could likely figure out if it had been her or not. I have no clue what she was wearing but if you said what you remember, I could likely have a clue if you met her. So, how did it all go?
I, nor she, knew she'd be running into you guys and if I had known, I could have made it so you met up. I found out after the fact (she did not even know the auditions were going on til she ran into them) and then told her, that I thought some CC kids were there yesterday.

| Chris, yeah that was my confusion earlier but anyway, from your PM, sounds like you did talk with my daughter. How funny is that considering it was not set up in advance and she was not there to audition by just came upon you guys by chance! Glad you got to talk.
Keeping positive thoughts for you all.

| Advanced Dance Audition - Nov 19th Thought I better post thoughts/experience at NYU/Tisch audition before it goes out of my head.
My D did the Early Decision audition for MT at Tisch on Saturday Nov 19th.
she had an 11:30am time slot- with the Advanced Dance audition as well. Cap 21 is her first choice of studio - but as she considers herself an actress first and foremost - would accept Atlantic or Playwright's as well.
I found the audition to be well run - even if she had to bring her own CD. (I believe Tisch is the only place to not use live pianist)
It was held in the Tisch building at 721 Broadway - we first went to the 3rd floor - and once they had filled out an initial form and officially 'checked in' they were sent to the 2nd floor to get ready for the dance audition. Parents were welcome to hang out, or leave and come back about an hour and a half later after the dance audition was completed. I had planned to leave and come back - but she had so many things to 'guard' that I figured rather than schlep them all over the city - I would just wait in the waiting room on the 2nd floor.
The space is the normal space for the Experimental Theatre Wing - one of the Tisch studios - not CAP 21's facilities. The main comment the my D had about the space they used for the dance audition was that the floor was slippery and there were no barres or mirrors. Obviously not a space normally used for dance. But - a nice wooden floor and as there were only 14 of them in the audition - plenty of room to move around.
They used a jazz warm-up (no ballet at all) and then they all learned a combination (2 teachers from CAP were in attendance - one taught - the other took notes) She has had 13 years of ballet - 3 years of jazz and 2 of tap - and felt that it was relatively 'easy'. They do stress in their literature that they expect that only students who have had 10 or more years of dance to be at these auditions. She felt that some of the kids certainly did not have that much - and struggled a bit with the combination.
They were then given about 5 minutes to change their clothes and report back into the same studio - with parents invited - for an orientation session that lasted about a half hour. The 2 auditioners (they would split the kids into two groups) gave a quick overview of Tisch/academics at NYU/and thumbnail sketches of each studio. They encouraged the kids (as all were ED candidates) to think about other studio choices if they so desired. they were also informed that they could certainly say "CAP 21 only" and would ONLY be considered for that studio. They reassured the kids that they go about assembling the CAP 21 kids first - and then go on to see if students that they liked - but didn't have room for in CAP 21 possibly put down other options. They said they DO NOT automatically 'bump' someone to another studio if they put a second choice down.
They also said that they figured most kids who apply ED already know about the studios as there were no questions. The auditioners were informative, kind, humorous and tried to put everyone at ease.
They then split the kids up into 2 groups - with lists posted on the studio doors as to order. (They were taken in the order that they signed up on-line for the audition) My D had signed up in third place on-line - so when they split the groups up - she ended up going second into the audition room.
She did her monologues first - and her songs second. She then sat down for a mini interview. He asked her about the plot of the plays the monologues came from (READ YOUR PLAYS!) and why she chose her songs.
He asked her why she wanted to be at Tisch and if she had any other studio she would consider. She told him Atlantic - and he wanted to know why. (READ UP ON THE STUDIOS IF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A SECOND CHOICE) She told him she thought it sounded alot like the way she works. (as well as other stuff...but I know that is the meat of what she told him)
She was finished with the entire audition by about 2:30pm -so about 3 hours. I did see kids from the 10am group who did not go in for their song/monologue auditions until after we got ready to leave. They say you could be there for 5 hours with the dance audition.
I know I have left out some details - and am happy to answer any questions - but I hope this helps someone down the line. I know posts before have certainly helped me in this process.
They said letters would be mailed out on December 15th. As we are in the Pacific Northwest - I figured we would know by around the 19-20th.
Hopefully - it will be a happy holiday! Keep your fingers crossed!

| Tisch ED Jane, thanks for sharing your experience! A good friend of my d's applied ED, too, but I haven't heard how that went. Last year my d didn't do the dance audition and since we signed up for the audition immediately, she auditioned first and we were out of there in less than an hour (LUCKY! Ha ha.) Many people last year thought it wasn't well-run; I didn't think that at all. Anyway, good luck to your daughter! My d loves it there!

| Jane, so glad to hear that the audition went well. I'll keep my fingers crossed for your D and hope that she gets the good news that my D got three long years ago now! By the way, not to increase the stress, but it's not unusual for E.D. kids to hear before the 15th from NYU so it's possible that your wait won't be as long as you think. |

| Jane, as you know I'm excited for your D and sending positive vibes her way. Sounds like a great audition.
Not to get into the details now but in the past, I felt it was a WELL RUN audition, organized and everything. The actual audition with the judges went well for my child, no complaints. Other stuff I shared here in the past had more to do with the set up of the audition and how it differed quite a bit from several other auditions we have been to (I have the luxury of comparing as we have been to 8!) and that some of the choices of how they set up the auditions for this school are ones that might benefit from some changes, in my view (and I know from older kids at CAP that these issues I brought up here in the past are discussed as some drawbacks that might need changing).
In any case, the good news is that your D had a very positive experience and in my opinion, that's what you want. The rest is out of your hands. I also agree that a student should know exactly why they want a school or a studio and be able to articulate it. Good job there for your D.
