I have a question for a student who goes to NYU Tish for Drama. I did the campus tour this winter break, and a lot of people who were there were interested in Tisch and in the question of double majoring. According to the NYU Admissions person who led the information session, it is definetely possible to double-major with a degree from Tisch and a degree from the College of Arts and Sciences due to the 2 days of liberal arts classes. However, some people have said the opposite about that. So I was wondering if any NYU Tisch student could clarify this for me. Thanks. I also have about 8 AP Classes from High School and 2 arts classes from a local community college. Will those help?

I am not a student at Tisch, but a young performer that worked for me this summer was a double major at CAP21 and in Psychology (I think)... I believe that even with this was able to graduate a semester early.

I am not a Tisch student but am a Tisch parent. Yes, it is possible to double major if in Tisch, though not easy. It is definitely doable, however, and many people do it. I know kids who have done it. I know someone who also did pre-med while in CAP21. Another option is to have a minor in addition to Tisch Drama. It likely will be even easier for you to figure in the double major if you get some AP credits. AlwaysAMom's daughter, who is a Tisch Drama graduate, had a double major, I believe. While I would not always believe certain "hype" on a college tour or information session, I certainly would take their word for it on factual things such as if they told you that you can double major. It IS true. When you say "some people" have said the opposite....who ya gonna believe.....the college directly or "some people"?

I am a Tisch student and what these people are saying is right. As a Theatre major you can double major, or minor in a subject through CAS. Check the CAS department's website for requirements of how many credits you need to complete for it. These credits can come out of your gen ed requirements. For a lot of minors they only require that you take four classes in the subject, so you could minor in a subject whilst also fulfilling your humanities/sciences requirement. For a double major you may end up having to take more credits than the standard requirements, so it would be pretty much impossible to graduate early. The procedure for it is, you need to take one class in the subject and then you can pick up a form and declare your double major/minor. Your advisor will speak to you about this if it's something you wana do. It's very common to double major or minor in a subject through CAS but it's extremely difficult to do it through any of the other schools, including in another Tisch subject. For example you could without question double major in French, but you probably can't double major in Film.

How about as a MT major at CAP21? I know that in some schools, musical theater majors are considered double majors. Is that the case with Tisch?

There is no difference in a MT major and an Acting major at Tisch in this regard. Actually, for the record, all get a BFA in Drama. The hours involved for a MT major are just like for an acting major at Tisch. MT is not a double major. The credit hours for studio are the same for a BFA at CAP21 or any of the other Acting studios, and same with the liberal arts requirements. (it is not like CMU for instance)

Yes, a person in CAP21 could double major in CAS (arts/sciences). Some do. I know someone who fulfilled the pre-med requirements while in CAP21. It is not that easy to fit in the requirements for another major. I'm sure AP credits help. I think it is more doable to have a minor but again, some do have a double major. My own kid doesn't have a double major or a minor. However, she does enjoy the liberal arts component. She also did not come in with AP credits. A fairly common thing at Tisch, particularly if one has some AP credits, is to graduate in 3 1/2 years. My D would never want to (not that she could) as she doesn't want to give up any time at Tisch.
