To any student that has applied to NYU/Tisch (CAP21) in the past few years:

If you applied to this school, what did you feel you would get out of this program that would make you marketable in the future? Many schools seem to offer singing, acting, and dancing -- so what made this school stand out for you?

At other schools, they talked about how, "New York was just the next step." CAP 21 kids go to auditions all the time, and we make connections with industry people. Also, in terms of teachers--theater professionals really want to live in New York to take advantage of the theater here, so it ATTRACTS wonderful teachers. CAP 21 is excellent about giving teachers the flexibility to perform. We have a few teachers on Bway now. One gives backstage tours of Spamalot. It's nice to know that your teachers have connections in the business. The NETWORKING is amazing.

sfkef, there are many performers that did not attend school in NYC but are still just as successful as NYU grads. How many of the instructors at NYU actually attended NYU? I'm sure the networking is great and I'm sure helps in some way. I would think that the program is also really strong and that helps grads work after college too.

One of the great things about NYU is the ability to switch focuses if you need to. I was hardcore MT when I arrived, but I am now leaving the program to pursue other avenues/studios that are more aligned with my new interests. Plus, NYC offers too many resources to name, and its an education almost everytime you leave your room.

Hey Chris...which studio are you going into for next fall? My D, who was in CAP for 2 1/2 years is now in ETW transfer track for this semester and will be in ETW upper level for next year. Not sure if you are exploring that one or not but she loves it. (she also loved CAP)

I did explore ETW, and auditioned, but did not get accepted

But, that's entirely fine, because it was my second choice. I was just accepted to the Adler Transfer Track today, so I'm definatley excited about that, as it was my first choice!

ETW would have been great, and ETW and Adler are TOTALLY different in a lot of ways, so either would have been a welcome addition to my education, but I feel like Adler is better suited for me.

Now THIS is a benefit of NYU, the ability to do so many things WITHIN Tisch...not to mention city. Access to so many different programs with totally different focuses.

Side note, from my year, we have people going to Playwrights, Classical, Adler, and ETW that I know of. I also have friends from other studios who are going to CAP, so it's not 4 years of that one studio...important for prospective students to know.

Congrats to you Chris! My D has always said that Adler is a fantastic acting studio and so I think you will love it and the chance to focus on acting now. I am glad you are pointing out to prospective students that one thing that differs at Tisch with some other BFAs is to do more than one studio during the four years and to really get some of everything, so to speak. And no matter what studio you are in, you can audition for any shows that are for all of Tisch. It sounds like your year's group at CAP is similar to my D's year (the one ahead of you). soozievt and chrisnoo, that definitely IS a huge benefit of Tisch over other programs. How many freshmen who come into CAP generally decide early on (freshmen or sophomore years) to transfer out to other acting studios? And does this mean some from the acting studios can then transfer INTO CAP after, say, freshmen year?

NMR....you CANNOT switch after FRESHMAN year to other studios. You must stay in your first studio which is referred to as "Primary studio" for two full years. My D happened to stay for 2 1/2 years (and btw, CAP is a 3 1/2 year studio, not four). After two years, you can apply and audition for an ADVANCED studio or stay in your original studio for the advanced years of it. Some Advanced Studios are JUST for advanced years and not primary...such as Stonestreet or Classical Studios. Otherwise, there are advanced studios and transfer track studios in the other acting studios and yes, someone from an acting studio can audition for their last two years into CAP21. Please realize that many of these (not sure if all, but may be all) studio transfers involve applications (inc. essays) and auditions and so you can't just change because you wanna. I can't tell you how many change. My D's CAP21 year may be about half (not sure the exact number, sorry...maybe a little more than half?) staying in CAP through senior year but about half have gone to other studios for their advanced studios years. My D switched in the middle of junior year but many of her classmates did it at the start of junior year. My D is only missing one semester of CAP21 training and the showcase semester (although she was allowed to come back for showcase semester, she opted not to and will just audition for the Tisch MT showcase next year). So, she is doing ETW for three semesters, the first being what is called ETW Transfer Track that she is in this spring. I don't know how many transfer INTO CAP but I think it is a very small number. She mentioned two or three friends who switched in this year from Adler and Strasberg. I think it is hard to do, but it can be done. I know she said it was very hard to get into ETW Transfer Track. If I recall, she may have said some very large number tried out for ETW and they only take 15. I forget the large number at this moment (sorry) but it was hard to get in. I don't know the odds of the other advanced studios but do know that ETW transfer track is hard to get into and that transferring into CAP is not easy either.

I am procastinating at work, so I looked and found a thread where Chris says he started at Tisch in the Fall of 2006, which would make him currently a second semester sophomore.

Right...Chris is a sophomore currently in CAP21. He is a year behind my daughter. Alas, that must be your confusion as you thought he was a frosh. But you can't change studios until you complete two years in your primary studio. You can change for advanced studio at that time (or sometimes just for your fourth year....many do three years in the first studio and one at another). For a CAP21 student, your D could stay three years and then do another studio for one year and only miss one semester of CAP (as it is a 3 1/2 year program) and actually miss NO CAP training, just the CAP showcase semester (and try to be in the Tisch MT or Acting showcases instead).

NOCCA JUNIOR is a freshman and he is transferring to CAP21 next year. I believe that he is currently in Adler (not 100% sure that Adler is correct).
