I was admitted to Oberlin just recently~ (YAY!!!)
I was wondering how their biological sciences are~
I want to become a doctor so i've been looking for a strong biological science program with biology/biochem/molecular biology/etc. (chemistry is a bit ugh for me...though i do expect a strong chemistry program as well)
I was admitted and wondering how much research activity goes on in the Biology department. Anyone on CC know how accessible biology labs are to research projects?
jyi9391 - congrats on your admission! From what I know, and from visiting, I think its safe to say that Oberlin has a VERY strong bio. science department. Students have the ability to do research with professors, and doing so is easy to hook up. I'm also going to be pre-med, and Oberlin pre-meds are very strong medical school applicants.
My son is a junior bio major. He started doing research with a professor last summer and will continue until he graduates so he will have a full 2 years under his belt. He will be with the group presenting at a national conference this summer and they are likely to get out an article or 2 before he graduates.
As an added bonus, hubby was talking to a bio colleague at a major research university recently and asking a few questions about grad school for our son. The professor at the school said that research at Oberlin was quite well respected by graduate schools.
Shennie, I will be visiting campus soon-hope to meet the Bio department profs and some students. Would your son recommend someone specific? I am not pre-med but I am interested in a career in research.
My son is not pre-med. He is currently working for Michael Moore (yes, his real name) who does plant studies. If you go to the website and look at the bio department, there is a list of the professors. Clicking on a name will give you a website where that prof. discusses his/her research. You might want to look over some of them and see if there are particular projects that interest you.
