Parents & Orientation?

I am planning to fly from the west coast the eve of August 24 to help my daughter move in on August 25 (my idea not hers of course!). For those parents who have done this before, how long did you stay? Did you leave the evening of move in day or did you stay an extra day? Are the parents sessions the day after move in day worth hanging around for?

When I took my daughter two years ago, we drove over the day before, and scoped out the dorm and different buildings on campus so I wasn't coming in completely with no clue the next day. We spent the night in North Olmsted, and got last minute things at Target and Walmart. The next day we got to the dorm around 9, moved in with lots of help from student volunteers, then I parked the car. We did all the stuff you do, got her registration packet, signed up for a local bank account, got her computer supplies, had lunch at Stevie, etc. She spent that night at the hotel with me, then the next day I dropped her off for her first session and was on my way home. I didn't do any of the special parent stuff. My niece is also at Oberlin, and last year was her first year. My sister and brother in law did do some of the extra things, such as the picnic, the concert, etc., and seemed to enjoy them. If you are coming from a distance, and don't anticipate being on campus often, it might be good to take advantage of the special things they are offering for parents, such as the tours and all. Oberlin is such a beautiful campus, and if you see baskets of peaches out on the tables in the registration building, make sure you take one. They are the best!
