The Town?

What's the town like outside the college? Are there things to do or do students feel isolated? I know there's a lot happening on campus but is it really a lot ... do you feel the need sometimes to drive to a bigger place. And where would that be, probably Cleveland? Thanks!

The town is very connected to the college (the main street is basically the edge of campus). There is a main street with some different businesses (by this I mean a few stores, restaurants, service places), but basically, it is the main street and everything else around town is simply residential. It's a very beautiful little town with lots of nice green streets though. But the town doesn't really offer much in the way of entertainment, just some of the basic necessities. Due to lack of public transportation, I do tend to feel isolated and would probably get off campus a bit more if I could find a way. There are some parks and bigger shopping areas closer to Oberlin, but the next big city is Cleveland. However, I've managed to survive basically not venturing out of the town except for breaks, and though sometimes I'd like to get out more, as you said yourself, there's a lot going on on campus to make up for it. Plus you're a busy student so it's hard to find time to get off campus!

Events

There's often lots of events in Tappan Square for town-gown. Last weekend was Community Day, to celebrate the Apollo being reopened (old-fashioned one-screen movie theater!). This weekend is the Culture Festival, with college-community groups giving performances and demonstrations. I don't think there's too much going on for the next two weekends (Fall Break is soon), but there's Local Foods Fest coming soon. Mmmm...

Otherwise, Oberlin the town is awesome. I wrote a pretty sappy entry about it (and Fall Break) a while back--

Goodies in town:
- Solaluna Yoga Studio
- Scones at Oberlin Market
- Kittens at Ginko Gallery
- Ice Cream at Yesterdays
- Awesome clothes at Ratsy's
- Events/readings at FAVA Gallery
- Open Mics at Agave
- Feve-band
