I recently recieved the eminence scholarship, which covers the full cost of attendance, from OSU. I was really, really surprised as I dont concider myself a really great student or anything, nor had I heard of the scholarship when I applied to OSU. In any case, this is making me SERIOUSLY concider OSU over some of the other schools I got into. I was wondering if any of you guys know about the added benefits of being an eminence scholar once on campus? Also, do you know if this scholarship would all me to be in the honors program (because I didn't apply to the honors program :/ )?
Thanks in advance for your help guys!
My daughter also received this scholarship. You should be receiving a letter by mail. But we got an e-mail from the Honors college of which she is a part of stating it was not from them but from the university and it covers everything. Here is aprt of that e-mail
"While the Eminence Scholarship is not tied to the University Honors & Scholars Center, I requested the privilege of notifying you because you are a member of the incoming Honors & Scholars Community for Autumn 2012. You were selected for the Eminence Scholarship by a committee comprised of faculty and staff from throughout the University. You are among just 50 incoming freshmen in the inaugural cohort for this scholarship.
Listed below are a few specific details about the benefits and requirements of the Eminence Scholarship. Please note that you will be sent an official award letter via the U.S. mail, and the scholarship will appear on your financial aid award notification that is scheduled to be released on April 2, 2012.
The Eminence Scholarship is an award of full tuition and covers up to 18 credit hours per semester. Additionally, it provides for room and board, a book allowance, and miscellaneous expenses. Since the value of the Eminence Scholarship is the full cost of attendance, it replaces of any other scholarship(s) that may have been already communicated to you.
The Eminence Scholarship also includes a one-time $3,000 enrichment grant that can be applied toward the cost of an approved project (e.g., study abroad, internship, research, etc.) during your sophomore, junior, or senior year.
The Eminence Scholarship is renewable for a total of eight semesters of undergraduate education, provided that you maintain at least a 3.2 grade point average. This will be assessed at the conclusion of your second year of study at Ohio State and every year thereafter.
You will also receive additional benefits such as exposure to research opportunities, networking with faculty and staff, and special programming across campus ranging from diversity awareness to service projects"
Honors was previously by invitation only, but this year things changed and one had to submit an application to be considered for Honors. As mentioned, the deadline for this has passed, but I agree with JohnKS to contact them and see what can be done, given the scholarship you have received. It can't hurt to ask, and the perks of the Honors program (my daughter loves being able to schedule early) are worth the effort.
Purplemooses, were you able to find out anything about the honor's college? D is in the same situation - got Eminence recently but did not apply to the honor's college previously. Would like to find out.
Congratulations on receiving OSU's brand new scholarships! I just read about the Eminence scholarships on another CC thread about increasing FA.
Just one quick note about the honors college- you can apply after your freshman year also. There might be some exception to freshman admission with the new scholarship, but either way, it can be an option for sophomore year as well.
I was able to contact someone in the honors program and they offered me a spot if I want to take it but mentioned that being in the honors program is not necessary for receiving the scholarship
Zippiz, some of the academic stuff:
-I attend the best high school in my state and have a 3.95ish unweighted
-I got a 2100 and something on the SAT, I dont remember what, but I did significantly better on CR and Math than on writing.
-Got 790, 770 on subject tests
-I will have taken 12 APs by the time I graduate. I've got 5 5's and 2 4's so far...
-I'm also nationally ranked in my sport and am a recruited athlete at Ohio State...
Hope that helps!
purplemooses, thank you for letting us know what you found out about the honor's college. From another thread, we understand you have a lot of nice choices. Have you been able to figure out your decision yet?
Thanks, it was rude of me to ask, I was just frustrated. Congrats on your scholarship! You SHOULD consider yourself a great student!
I have a 34 ACT, about the same GPA unweighted an 800 and a 780 SAT subject tests. I have taken 12 AP + IB's as well, and my senior year schedule is nothing but AP and IB classes. I am a boy scout and the lead programmer on a robotics team for four years. No sports though, oh well.
Well congratulations, and I truly mean that!
