I'm toying with the idea of majoring in either English (with an emphasis on creative writing), art history, history or a foreign language (most likely french or italian)... out of the following schools, which would be the best to attend?

Wellesley
Williams
Amherst
Dartmouth
UPenn
NYU
Brown

Well....I'm going to Penn for english (creative writing emphasis) and I'll do a few languages (they have a great romance language department) so of course I'm promoting them. But NYU has the Gallatin School and you could possibly combine your interests into one major. You could also try majoring in english while minoring in a foreign language. Then you could talk with the english department about focusing on history. I don't know if that's an option but you could try it.

I got into NYU. What really attracted me to it was its reputation for Egnlish and Creative Writing. Because lets face it--if youre a writer, and you want to make decent money, you had better be DAMN good. NYU has CHURNED out pultizers over the years.

I'm hesistant to back up Gallatin. Too many people have paid the arm and leg that NYU costs, majored in something so esoteric that their job market was almost nil. CAS is a better bet. Though Creative Writing is only a minor at CAS, don't be fooled into thinking they dont take is damn seriously.

Then again, if you wanna go Ivy, go Ivy.

What do you think is a more 'practical' major, english ( and/or creative writing) or history?

Hmm.. interesting. Thanks for the comments so far. Personally, I think English is a more practical major because it's such a flexible major.
