Anyone tried taking a photography course without it being your major?

I was thinking of taking a class that would require a heavy use of the right brain, and while looking at the arts courses that my school offers, I saw an introductory photography course that sounds interesting. I always liked photography and did a little of amateur work on my own, as most of us have, but I never really considered taking a course in it until now. My question is, I guess, would it manageable for someone who is not artistically talented, being around people who intend on majoring in the subject and all? Anyone had similar experience and would like to share? :-)

i really love the idea of taking photography, especially because i want to be a journalist/photojournalist. i'm going to be double majoring in english and history (yikes!) and so it's going to be hard to squeeze in photography and journalism classes (transferring from CC) especially since they are non transferrable credits. but i think you should definitely try a class, see if you like it--photography is a really interesting subject and it could just be a hobby or maybe supplemental to whatever job you decide to have inthe future (depending on whatever that is)

anyways im using too many ()s but i saw that no one had replied and i was like WHY NOT!??!!

go photography haha :]

also, i'm not sure what you mean by "amateur work." if this means picking up a camera with auto settings and pointing and shooting then maybe i should explain some more.

photography is part art (composition, lighting, subject matter, etc) and one part technology (knowing and adjusting camera settings such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed, focus, etc. in order to achieve the desired effect). once you have the technology part down and you sort of have a pretty good understanding of how a camera works (you'll probably start with film which, surprisingly, isn't always harder than digital) you can work more on taking pictures and improving on your techniques.

anyway, hope i didn't tell you something you already knew ;]

i took some photography classes back when i was in high school.
in introductory of photography usually you'll learn about all the basic things in photography,,starts from how to use the SLR camera, composition, angle, etc. it doesnt need a high art skill to pass this class. the objective for this class is that you understand can practice all of the basic things in todays photography.

if youre interested in photography,,go for it. it's really a great (and expensive)hobby... enjoy!
