Preparing for a career in foreign service/diplomacy...

I'm just curious...are any CCers with an interest in a career in foreign service/diplomacy majoring in something other than IR/political science/economics, such as American Studies, History, Foreign Languages, Classics, Anthropology, Religion, etc.? I've posted on this topic before as I believe a broad-based liberal education that focuses on understanding our own American history and culture, as well as the history, languages, and cultures of other societies is the best preparation. Such a preparation shouldn't exclude politics and economics, but a preparation focused primarily on political and economic studies isn't sufficient.

No, a study of Pol. Sci. and Econ. is not bad. Just do you want to do. If you want to do IR and Foreign Service, then go to GTown SFS or GW IS program.

Several of my friends in anthropology and Near Eastern studies went into foreign affairs (including one Assyriology major). While none of my fellow classics majors did, several went to law school, and I know of at least one who plans to study international law.

Some of the best schools for IR placement don't offer it as a major.
