English major? What's the deal?

Hey everyone,
So I'm trying to decide my prospective major in college. I keep changing my mind...but most importantly I can't find my true "niche."
I've always loved reading and especially writing, so I was curious what major in English entails? Also...are there any specific writing majors like "creative writing" or something at top schools? I know Brown University has a literary arts program which sounds really interesting...but I'm just not sure!!

All help will be greatly appreciated!!!

I would say only go for a major in Creative Writing if you are very talented at it and could make a living doing something related to it--writing, teaching, etc. On that note, some schools I'll throw out for you: Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins (yes, surprisingly--fantastic Writing Seminars program), Columbia, Barnard, Univ of Iowa . . . Princeton, if you're looking up high, also has a good program.

Also, take a look into anthropology--lots of stuff around here about these programs. Classics and Linguistics may be of interest to you . . .

All top schools have relatively good English programs. Check out UMich and UNC as well.

Hope that helped.

I guess I'm halfway qualified to help-- I'm an English literature major, but I don't have any experience in creative writing. A lot of schools have creative writing departments, although you'd have to check each department. I second the suggestion to look at Iowa, and I hear that Cornell also has a great program.
