| Is Obama a socialist, or are you just paranoid?
Let's not leave any stones unturned: several radical allegations of Obama being a socialist have me wondering if many parents in this forum are paranoid; either that, or seriously impressionable and easily influenced by mass media.

I agree. I guess your "location" spells out a few things. It has not even been five months since he has taken office and people are already paranoid. People, the same idiots who make 20,000k a year and decide to buy houses worth millions, want the economy to be "fixed".
Yet, in spite of this breath of fresh air, people continue to buy as if everything is fine. Consigning themselves to MORE debt. If anything this is a time for people to understand the importance of hard work... Let's beg to god that when my generation plans to reproduce (not the idiots who already have) that they won't be called the "entitlement" generation.
Americans, until this generation, have worked hard to get where we are. However much others hate us America is a great beacon of freedom... Economically, socially, sexually, in any aspect you would like to think of. I think that same effort that our forefathers worked for translated into a great economy. Prosperity. Equity. Early retirement. Paid college education. Loans. Everything. That has translated to the spoiling of my generation.
Of course we can live by Ayn Rand's philosophy. I actually laughed. A few staunch republicans (I am not making fun of republicans, just their insults) said Obama is failing because he is not following Ayn Rand's philosophy.
Anyway, people are extremely paranoid about a socialist way of life. I am a very staunch capitalist supporter but just take a look at some things. A lot of western Europe, especially pre Sarkozy France, had strong socialist regimes. They had less teen pregnancy. More general happiness. Less hypocrisy. Better healthcare. An ability to move through social classes, though in places like Denmark the line between up and low is "blurred".
I agree, though, I find this who thing funny.

Obama is not a socialist. He's just not. People who say that Obama is socialist only say that because they don't know what socialist really means. No worries, the US is going to stay crazy capitalist; Obama isn't going to change that.
People are just paranoid.

I agree with that sentiment. I doubt most of the people who use the word "socialist" and "communist" so liberally have a CLUE in hell what it means.

Not exactly the response you are looking for but:
a) There is a separate cafe for threads about politics within the parents forum
b) You should not assume that all posters on the parents forum/cafe are "parents" (eg the first response to this very thread: "Let's beg to god that when my generation plans to reproduce" does not sound like this poster is a parent!)
That being said, I admit to feeling a little paranoid - that so MANY people seem to believe Obama is a socialist |

Hehe. Yeah, I'm not parent... Just lurking around. :P
If anything, though, I feel paranoid about how people judge Obama.
Quote from a TEACHER in my school (I admit to having eavesdropped when he was talking to his wife in a local cafe) "I pray to god Hussein does not bring his Taliban folks in and kill us all... I don't know what to do... Canada maybe...".

BO is just an empty suit..not vetoing the last bill full of earmarks proves it..He's just another politician that will say anything to get elected. It's obvious that the country suffers when one party controls everything. Passing a 1,000 page bill without anyone getting a chance to read the darn thing was despicable.
Is he a socialist? Look what he's trying to do....it's not paranoia, it's obvious

"Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital, creates an unequal society, and does not provide equal opportunities for everyone in society. Therefore socialists advocate the creation of a society in which wealth and power are distributed more evenly"

And, pray-tell, how is Obama consigning himself to this definition.
Of course he is not signing nobids to Haliburtan or giving rich people more money but that's fine with me.

| All you've done is provide a bunch of generalizations. Obama could not have passed the bill single handedly even if he wanted to (government checks and balances). Secondly, to say that no one has read the stimulus bill is bizarre and further supports the idea that some are just paranoid and easily influenced by the media. Do you honestly think Congress would have approved without first reading the bill? And why are so many so adamantly against Obama's plan to redistribute wealth. It's not a socialist idea, its called a progressive tax and has been supported by many past presidents.

They were handed a 1,000 page bill at midnight and they voted on it at 7:00...yes, most voted without reading it and BO signed it without reading it.
Influenced by the media? now that is funny.
Sure..tax and spend...yawn
