She has a $7 million book deal, or so the media says. She will be able to pay her debts if she gets the book written. I wish her well.

| I wonder whether we are about to find out
how Sarah's house really came to be built. You may remember that it was built at the same time as the infamous Wasila Sports Complex. Todd claims to have thrown up the 3500+ square foot two-story structure himself, with a couple of his buddies.
I've never seen Sarah so nervous and distracted.

Momofinca...you are right....lots of posts have gone up to divert the topic!
Back on topic...
Today, Sarah Palin said: Quote: |
Some are going to question the timing of this and let me just say this decision has been in the works for a while and comes after much consideration – prayer and consideration – and finally I polled the most important people in my life, my kids, where the count was unanimous, where in response to the question 'Do you want me to make a positive difference and fight for all our children's future from outside the governor's office,' it was four yeses and one "hell, yeah,' and the hell yeah sealed it and someday I'll talk about the details of that.
| What did she think they were gonna say? I think her family really needs her right now and she thrust them into the limelight at a sensitive time......an infant....who also has special needs....an unwed pregnant teenage mother...and five kids under the age of 18 (though by now one is older than that) and so on. It has invited elements into their life at a time when they need a mom who can be around more for them and not in the public eye to this degree and not traveling the country. What kid would not have said what hers did in this situation?

I think there is a difference between Michelle Obama's situation and Sarah Palin's. It does not have to do with ethics.
In the case of Michelle Obama, I suspect her raise in salary was to a large extent due to her husband's clout. There is no evidence that she asked for it. The hospital was free to offer her whatever it took to retain her services and to fire her if she was found inadequate. So it must have found what she did satisfactory. Her work need not have involved putting in 8 hours in the office, so she could have tailored it to accommodate regularly scheduled ECs for her daughters. I don't see any story there.
For Sarah Palin, unless there are new revelations, I don't see it as a question of ethics, either. Sure, she is disappointing those who voted for her and continue to support her. But she has reasons of her own to step down. When Trig was born, the demands on her time were probably less than they have become now that he is older and perhaps she is tired of trying to reconcile the many demands on her time, including fighting off ethics accusations, many of which, by all accounts, are frivolous.
The more discussion-worthy issue, in my opinion, is the effect of this resignation on her political future and on the GOP. Perhaps, as some commentators have suggested, she is out of politics for good. Perhaps, she is gearing up for a presidential campaign, in which case quitting 2/3 into her very first term as governor may not burnish her credentials.
As for the GOP, it looks like the field of leaders is thinning rapidly: Ensign, Sanford, Palin...

"Do you want me to make a positive difference and fight for all our children's future"
I wonder what she meant by this? Doesn't sound the same as "do you want me to stay home and be a hands on mom?" Sounds like she still has public aspirations somehow or somewhere. Oh well, it was always to hard to follow her meandering, mixed up metaphorical way of speaking and try to figure out what she was trying to say....

Having watched the press announcement, I just can't believe that she is serious about running for President. Not only was she meandering, she looked and sounded nervous, even sort of freaked out. And she announced on "take out the trash day" (as the "West Wing" called it). Friday before a major holiday? That's when you announce something you are ashamed of and just want it to blow over by Monday (in the days before 24-7 news, the Saturday papers were the least read and the Friday evening news the least watched).
Maybe there is a scandal about to break (or she caved to blackmailing).

"And my question is deemed ridiculous because of the analysis quoted above? An analysis that suggest I did not know that the POTUS was in Washington but Mrs. Obama remained in Chicago?"
HUH?? He wasn't POTUS when he first moved to Washington, he was a senator. Get it straight.
| Mrs. Menlopark, instead of trying so hard to pass me for an ignoramus who would not know Mr. Obama was not the POTUS before 2009, please try this exercise:
Mr. Obama is the CURRENT POTUS of the United States. Since I wrote this TODAY, you replace the term POTUS by Mr. Obama. Present and past tenses have both a place in contemporary writing.
Are you practicing the art of deflection?

are you not able to use the past tense when you write? Mr Obama WAS a senator. He IS now the POTUS. When he WAS a SENATOR, he wife lived in Chicago.

| She would not be the first politician who leaves office with huge debts, only to find it very hard to comply with the necessary (and lengthy) financial disclosures for, say, the position of Vice-President. No conspiracy theory or allegation here ... simply the recognition that politicians to have te ability of earning substantial incomes as soon as the ethic rules are relaxed.

Attention all Sarah Palin 'Devotees', you know who you are-
It's a beautiful evening here at the mansion. 'Rita's and nachos on the veranda pronto! We can pull up chairs and discuss our homage to St. Palin. You all remember directions: last house on the right, Sarah flag, Sarah posters, Sarah statue in the front garden.
** Followers of 'The One' <dubbed by Oprah herself> kool-aid is at the house on the left. |

pizzagirl,
all your statements are just repeat of mainstream media bashing of Palin. There is nothing in there what you think personally after you listen to her. She was the only one deserved to listen to out of 4 people running last year. Obviously you love the results of that run. Good luck and the best wishes!

What's been amazing to me, is how much bad blood is between the McCain staff and Paiin and her staff. It seems that of the nasty charges made against Palin, some of the worst came from within the McCain campaign itself. After all, it sure wasn't the Dems behind the Vanity Fair article, or the release of the emails this week.
I was just checking in with one of my favorite political sites, named after our very own LGM, and they seem to be as puzzled as many of us about what this is all about. I guess time will tell.
