Palin Not to Run for 2nd Term as Gov.; to resign at end of month

Palin Opts Against Run for Second Term as Alaska Governor
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Friday that she would not seek a second term, setting up a potential run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.

Palin Opts Against Run for Second Term as Alaska Governor - Political News - FOXNews.com

For one thing, I don't get that if she is not seeking re-election for a second term as governor, why she needs to resign this month and not just simply finish out this term.

Second, I do not believe she is a viable candidate for POTUS. Even her approval rating in her own state is dropping.

Her presidential campaign is going to be even more of a disaster than Giuliani's.

I can't wait.

I don't remember reading anything that indicated that she will be running for anything. Did I miss something?

"and you know what a mayor is, it's like a community organizer, but with real responsibilities".

And you know what a governor is, it's like a community organizer, but with real responsibilities you can walk away from whenever you feel like it.

Didn't Obama walk away from his responsibilities to the people of Illinois. (At least he still collected the paycheck ).

I just heard her speak at the press conference. She said that her and her husband have accumulated $500k in legal fees, fighting media claims about her and her family.

I also got the impression from her statements that fighting these claims take time away from running the state in an effective manner.

tega, other candidates don't make snarky comments about community organizers, and try to discredit other people's service. Is like the family values people with multiple girlfriends on the side.

There are lots of petards out there that people insist on being hoisted on.

LGM, why would she have legal fees from that? Was she being sued? I thought fighting the media was a job for political staff, who get paid by their campaigns?

this makes no sense. What does a run for ANYTHING in 2010/2012 have to do with WORKING in July 2009

If she said she was doing this 'for the sake of her family', ie to be a full time mom, now THAT I would understand (and applaud)

I don't think the state was paying her personal legal fees from slander against her or her family.

There were many things said by different news agencies and magazines over the last almost year from her introduction into the VP campaign.

Do you also include the jobs "community organizers" can walk away from without much fanfare. Jobs such as Vice President for External Affairs at a Chicago hospital, a glorified sinecure that was so important it neither existed before being lavished upon a promising "newcomer" nor replaced after her departure. All in all, a pretty wise investment for the corrupt mentors who are now toiling in DC!

But, of course, it IS so much more fun to skewer mercilessly the soon to be former Governor of Alaska! Or debate sleeve lengths and protruding biceps!

Palin doesn't just have legal fees to fight "media claims" but she also has had many ethics inquiries that she has had to deal with. I don't believe that fighting media claims is the reason for her resignation.

As Palin is a public figure, she is fair game for critique, like any other politicians of all persuasions discussed on this forum.

The speculation is that she is resigning as Gov in order to make time to run for POTUS. News articles mention this.

I still don't quite get the need to resign as opposed to simply not running for re-election once her term is up. She'd have plenty of time after her term to seek election as POTUS.
