Gitmo detainees want to stay there

Apparently they are treated so poorly that they want to stay.

Quote:
The 221 remaining inmates receive between four and 20 hours outdoor recreation in the Caribbean sun and anything from weekly to almost unlimited access to DVDs and receive three newspapers (USA Today, plus one Egyptian and one Saudi Arabian title) twice a week. Every bed has an arrow pointing towards Mecca and every cell a prayer rug.
Quote:
The detainees' diet is exclusively Middle Eastern and halal, in observance of regional and religious sensitivities. Dates, olive oil and honey are provided daily and pita bread is baked on the premises. They drink the same bottled water as the prison's staff and have the same access as other prisoners to 16,000 books and 1,600 magazines held at the library.

An escorted tour of Guantánamo by the Daily Telegraph revealed that Camp 7's requested reading included Gardens of the World by Mick Hales, Fine Art Flower Photography by Tony Sweet and a copy of Birds and Blooms magazine, material in keeping with nature-bound leisure pursuits approved by conservative Islam. Two volumes of the Tales of the Arabian Nights were also in the pile. Tomes on Islamic theory are in plentiful supply and demand, said library staff.
Quote:
Since 2005 an Arab American cultural adviser, who for security reasons is identified only by the name of Zak, has been employed at Guantánamo to liaise with detainees.

He said that some detainees would rather stay put than go on trial in the US, where they would probably receive a life sentence or could wait years for a death sentence to be carried out.

Maybe they want to stay because they will be offered the H1N1 vaccine........which as many of us know, there is a shortage here:
Quote:
Terrorism suspects held at the Guantanamo Bay naval base will soon get swine flu vaccines, despite complaints that American civilians should have priority, a military spokesman said Sunday.

It is utterly ridiculous that they are getting the vaccine because they are at higher risk being in a prison.
The pregnant women I take care of are at huge risk and right now we don't have enough vaccine for them.
I have sent 5 women to the ICU with complications of the H1N1 flu.
What kind of people are making these decisions???

Could they also fear for the life among the "regular" prisoners?

I feel I have to point out that these people are not convicted criminals--they are, at best, suspects. While many of them are no doubt implacable enemies of our country, probably some of them aren't, and it hasn't been proven with respect to any of them.

Yes, they are innocent, but that does not change the fact that they don't want to leave Gitmo. The real issue that will determine where they will be housed is if they will be tried by the military or the federal court. You can't move them until that decision is determined, the rest is all moot.

Yes, this is the first thing that came to my mind, b&p. A little taste of American prison vengence (as they've no doubt seen courtesy of Hollywood) has got to seem scary. I'd take my chances with the swine flu . . .

I agree, I am sure they live in fear that our "traditional" prisons will not be a place that would keep them safe as they await their trial.

One unnamed guy said that "some" detainees would rather stay. This is a headline?

How's it any different than a lot of the sources these newspapers use?

Sounds like a motel from the description. I'm sure it's a lot worse than the description.

GITMO needs to be shut down. I'm pointing out the writer's clear bias.
