Possibly, according to AP:

The AARP represents everything bad about special interest groups. Its sole purpose is to lobby for taking money from other generations and giving it to today's seniors. I have never seen a greedier group of people than today's seniors. Unfortunately, I suspect that future groups of seniors will be just as greedy.

I just read the main provisions of the House bill on the CNN website. I don't see what people have a problem with- it seems to be really good! If it really does succeed in covering 96% of Americans that would be phenomenal.

I particularly like how they raise money by taxing individuals with incomes over 500,000 and families with incomes over 1.0 million, and by cutting Medicare/Medicaid spending.

I also like the 2.5% penalty on anyone who does not buy insurance.

The AARP put out an entire issue of their magazine about health care. It was thoughtful and they spoke openly about how they had lost members because as a group they decided to stand for reform and coverage. They spent a lot of pages explaining their reasoning.

I rarely agree with razorsharp - that name! - but it's true that polls show the main sources of opposition to healthcare reform are people already receiving government health benefits, particularly men.

BTW, as noted in Nicholas Kristoff's column in the NYT - here - the US lags the world in most health indicators until we get to those of an age to receive Medicare because then we have universal coverage.
