Speakers to use with computer?

Hi -

I'm starting to look into the possibility of getting a small pair of speakers for S. He has an iPod and CD's, but mainly he listens to music on his computer, through Pandora. So I'm trying to understand what would work and how everything connects up. How do we get music that's streaming over the internet to go to the external speakers, without connecting the laptop directly to the speakers? The default location for the laptop is the bed; the speakers would be on a desk or bookshelf.

My questions are:
- Which device should connect to the speakers? We are a Mac household and have an Airport Extreme for wireless networking. The Airport is not in his room, which is where he listens to music. If the speakers should connect directly to the Airport, does it help to get an extender to put in his room - would that work instead?
- What kind of cables do we need? Is it typically something you get on your own (hence I have to know what to get) or will the right cables come with the speakers?
- Does anyone have specific recommendations for small speakers that would work in a situation like this, sound good, and are not too pricey?

Thanks...
