Geno's and Pat's have to be two of the most overrated places I have ever eaten--along with Lexington BBQ. All three ended up half eaten and in the trash. There is another Philly place that many locals like better and it won a taste challenge with chef Simon I think. Tony Lukes. Have not been there yet. And yes, I am close to an expert on this.NJ has as many good places as Philly.

barrons. I was totally disappointed in Tony Lukes...had the pork and brocolli rabe. I would like to try JOHNS for a sandwich. They got a nice write up for bbq pork.
I was also unimpresed with Genos. Better cheesesteaks at most hoagie shops.

We went to Philly last summer ... we went to the Geno/Pat corner one day for lunch; the corner is pretty much in a residential neighborhood and the cheese steak was OK at best ... we also went to Jim's on South street (I think) which was better food in a much funkier neighborhood.

My best philly cheesesteak was in Chicago at some place under the train. It may be that the level of taste is proportional to the fat content though.

Had lunch at Tony Luke's. Seemed a little touristy. None of that "wit"/"widdout" and we were able to order Blue Moon beer, which didn't seem authentic. But the cheesesteaks were delicious, as were the onion rings. Our son had previous been to Jim's which he also said was very good. Next year we'll look for the roast pork sandwiches.

Lived in Philly for 12 years. Never had one I thought was particularly good. The best was in the airport, as I remember. Great sausage or eggplant parmesan grinders, though.

Good Philly style sandwiches in Seattle at Hey Paisan in downtown Burien. Excellent cheesesteak, Italian Sub, and meatball sandwiches. Bread flown in from Philly and fresh. Tastykakes too. Hey Paisan! |
