| The power of college confidential!
Have any of you ever had someone from the CC community do something nice for you? I bet there are some examples. Here's mine
One of the members of this community is in the same professional field as one of my daughters. This amazing woman went to incredible lengths on my daughter's behalf, forwarding job postings, making contacts, even offering professional development advice. Well, my D started yesterday and a job she is incredibly excited about as the direct result of the kind intervention of this CC poster. I can't tell you how humbled and grateful we are at the generosity shown to my daughter. I know that she will pay it forward as soon as she gets the chance. I won't mention the poster unless she gives permission or outs herself, but I wanted to make mention of what a wonderful thing happened to my D.
Any other examples?

I've gotten tons of great advice here, not all of it related to college. One poster PM'd me about a replacement window contractor who turned out to be excellent and not expensive. Another, a psychologist, was very supportive and gave me some valuable insights when a family member was having an episode of depression (again, via PM).
I was able to send a referral for a job opening to another poster. Unfortunately her kid didn't get the job, but I was glad to help out.

Several CC posters have hired me and then recommended me to others -- there's nothing that makes me more grateful than that!

That's excellent zoosermom - both getting the input from a CC member as well as your D landing a great job!

I once played a small role as go-between in helping another CC member's daughter. The daughter had been abandoned by her host student (who apparently had over-committed herself) while on an accepted-student visit and left her wandering the streets of Cambridge - alone.
Knowing from CC posts that my daughter attended the same college, she PMed me and asked if I could help. I called my daughter (who was out but one of her roommates who barely knew me took that call) and asked them to go out and find the unfortunate girl and help her. The roommate assured me they would take care of everything. I PMed back to the worried mom "Your worries are over. The girls of Winthrop House are on the case!"
And so they were. They went out and found her, brought her in to their place, included her in the group dinner and activities, and and later spent several hours with her having fun with some friends over in another House (Quincy I think).
The girl was grateful and impressed enough that she chose to attend Harvard herself and loved it when she got there.

A fellow 2010 parent sent my ds2 her son's old running cleats. He just wore them at his race Saturday.
I've edited essays for a couple of kids.

TheDad invited our family to to Thanksgiving dinner at his place in Santa Monica when we were visiting our son at USC. The invitation was in spite of the fact that he intensely disliked USC (LOL). Good food. Nice people.

I recall a few years ago when LegendofMax (young man looking for a job) had a job interview coming up in the northeast (NY, I think). He was worried that he did not have the right shoes for the interview... one of the parents who was posting on the threads where he was discussing this met him in NY and bought him some shoes so he would be set for his interview. That is one of my all time favorite CC stories!

I have numerous examples.
The two couples near Atlanta who graciously had lunch with DH and me when we were considering a relocation to that area. The three families in Reading, PA who did the same thing for the same reason. The woman who lives in the same town as S2 who not only showed him and me around, but found him a roommate, loaned him her van, and has been a wonderful resource. The woman who had dinner with S1 and DH and offered to get him tickets to temple for the holidays.
We are a wonderful group of people, aren't we?? |

Nice thread zoosermom! The people of CC have been wonderful. Very recent story. My D recently accepted a fall internship in NY. She attends a rural school, and we are from a suburban midwest area, and we had no idea where she could get short term furnished housing. Not only did we get a wonderful recommendation on where she could live, we were also given explicit directions on which subway/trains she would take to get to her job. CC is wonderful!

I remember when a long-time (over a year) student poster who was a part of a "Parents of the Class of...." thread found out she was getting $500 less in FA for her next semester than she expected. For this girl that money was crucial. She was a Questbridge student who was the first in her family to go to college, and was getting no support from her single mother. She was asking for advice on how to approach the FA office and explain her issue. Meanwhile, some of the rest of us on the thread conferred and decided to help her out. One of us PM'd her for her name & mailing address, and about a dozen of us sent her checks. I have no idea how much each person sent or what the total was, but it made a big difference to this student. As I said earlier, she'd been on this thread seeking advice and giving input from a student's point of view for well over a year and never asked or expected us to help her financially. It was just something we all felt good about doing.
I wouldn't recommend that students try this or that posters normally consider donating to other posters. It was a one-time thing, and I think it truly helped this girl.

I've gotten a tremendous amount of support this past year on CC, since both my sons were diagnosed with mental illness. It has been a safe place for me to share and vent. I've learned that a surprising number of students become ill - I never knew that! I'm really thankful for my CC friends.

A CC poster recommended our daughter's college...we had never heard of it before. DD offered "private" tours of her college to several CC families. One CC mom
went out of her way to meet DD at her college. We have hosted a few CC folks here (so much fun!).
