Looking for a gift for a puzzle-loving HS student. I've checked out the Ravensberger puzzles on AMazon and nothing strikes me as all that interesting. Are thre any other brands I should be looking at?

Second the recommendation for Stave puzzles. Not only are they challenging and interesting puzzles, they're also works of art--all are hand-crafted. You can even customize a puzzle from a photo. Be forewarned these are not inexpensive.

Pomegranate Puzzles. New York Puzzle Co. Both have interesting and high quality images. (less traditional art, including fabric art, New Yorker covers). Reasonably priced, easy to find in many independent bookstores. Good luck!

I'm a big puzzler. I agree that Stave puzzles are amazing, but to get one of their nontraditional, more interesting puzzles you'll have to spend a few hundred dollars. The Wentworth I have are well made wooden puzzles, matching the Staves in quality of cutting but not in inventiveness. Pomegranate are well constructed. Springbok have traditionally been a good value but the designs have become increasingly schlocky and the boxes skimpier. I have a couple of nice puzzles from Galison, NY and Schmid. The Galison have interesting designs, the Schmid have nice thick puzzle pieces.

White mountain puzzles I enjoy. They are nice quality. They look much nicer when completed than the website would make you think and they have all kinds of images. Often you can get a coupon code for inexpensive shipping too, usually $2.99 for as many as you order at one time. I've used that offer more than once in the last couple of years.

Consolation

These are hand-cut wooden puzzles made in Maine. They look awfully good to me. I notice that they have a rental club...a "subscription" would make a really great gift for a puzzle-lover, I'd think.

I don't know what brand it was but we had a puzzle that was 2 sided. We got about half of it done and couldn't finish it. It had the same photo on both sides but the pictures were a 1/4 turn off from each other. We worked on that thing for 6 months and gave up. I think it might have been from the Signals catalog but this was about 20 years ago.

I've never been a puzzle person but we get a catalog called Bits and Pieces that seems to have some nice puzzles in it.

Liberty Puzzles of Colorado. Awesome wooden puzzles that can keep a group entertained for a long time! They have specially cut fun pieces shaped like different items.
