| Short dress that shows shoulders. That is the norm for these things. |

| Thanks to you all for your very helpful advice. I have now found a dress at anthropologie that I think would suit her--she wouldn't go for bare shoulders-- what do you think of this (with a long strand of faux pearls): http://www.anthropologie.com/jump.js...Type=HOME_PAGE
item #630131 thistle dress ???
D is about 5' 4" and has a slender young-girl figure and looks younger than her age.
(I see it's one of your alamode!) Wow--all you guys are great --no problem too big or too smal for the CC parents.

| Everygirl that goes to college should have some basic black items that can be dressed up or down...and no matter the girls personal style they can find pieces to suit them:
simple black dress
black skirt
black pants- from gap kind to dressier trousers
black sweater
black blazer
some basic black and white shirts- from tanks to dressier
black bra (a necessaity with black attire)
a pair of black dressy shoes (heals are of course the best, but flats are good as well)
with those pieces, you are ready for almost any event-from funeral, to job interview, to dissertation, to date, to dinner at a profs house
add accessories to fit personality and you are set
a black clutch
some scarves
a few necklaces
a larger bag
a leather (can be $11 from target) portfolio for papers, resumes
and if a girl says, well, I just don't care so much about clothes and being girlie or whatever, these basics work for them and actually make life pretty easy
that is my mommy advice for the day |

| ps- you can add color with scarves, shawls, jewelry, sweaters, etc....
and some brown slacks are good for simpler occassions
oh yeah, a NICE pair of simple simple jeans, that have no obvious fading, are hemmed to the right length, no fraying, etc....saved for concerts, etc...one pair of decent jeans that you save for special stuff, not trudging in the snow, can last for years, if the cut is good, the style is classic and the fit is right |

| pps
my suggestions don't take away from anyones personal taste and style, think of them as a foundation to add to
and what is nice about black, you can wear black pants with different pieces every day of the week, like men do, and no one really notices
so if you wear say, a black skirt to five different events with different tops- a sweater, blazer, t shirt, whatever...its an easy way to dress |

| Thistle -- nice dress, nice price. Sheer sleeves make it a little more elegant, and will be especially nice for a young woman who doesn't want to show shoulders.
Only one negative....but not enough of a negative not to buy it. I'm not a fan of "dry clean only" -- but it's tough to find a nice "dressy" dress that can be washed.
Hope she has a great time! |

| Dangerous comment by student, but NO to the Thistle Dress. It will make her look even younger. Just not a college girl look unless it's MIT. Go sleeveless! |

| I agree with SPS and CGM. I do like that Macys dress. I think it would look great on your D's small build and still give her the coverage she wants. |

| Can we vote? If she won't go sleeveless, then I vote for the macy's dress that citygirlsmom linked to. If we are not voting then please ignore me.
I hope your daughter has a wonderful time at the event. |

| if we are voting, I have to agree with the Macy's dress. D will get a lot of mileage out of it because she can add accessories/ jackets to dress up or down for whatever the occasion |

| I could never pick out and buy a dress for my daughters without them OKing it. What I have done is to do the legwork online and search for a dress and then I will narrow down ones I think they might like and then I print out the options or send them the links. Once they pick the final choices, I may order two for them and then they try it on and return one. You could look online, send your D the links and have her choose and then you order it and bring it to her when you see her.
It is a bit trickier in your case as she doesn't want sleeveless, spaghetti strap, strapless, etc. as many of the party dresses for young women have no sleeves. The options are less, therefore.
I agree with others about the anthropologie dress, but think the Macy's sheath would work if your D likes that look. I found some other dresses that are not sleeveless of a variety of styles/looks and fabrics and price ranges. I only looked at black dresses since I think you said it was a black and white affair. Besides, a black dress can be used for various occasions in the future. Here are the links:
Basic and not as dressy as the Macy's dress, as it is jersey, but black: http://www.bluefly.com/pages/product...&Nu=Product+ID
Inexpensive, black, covers shoulders: http://www.bluefly.com/pages/product...&Nu=Product+ID
Sheer long sleeves: http://www.bluefly.com/pages/product...&Nu=Product+ID
Black, not as dressy, jersey v-neck with bubble sleeve: http://www.bluefly.com/pages/product...u=Produc t+ID
Black matte jersey ruched dress, inexpensive: http://www.bluefly.com/pages/product...u=Produ ct+ID
High Neck sheer cap sleeves: http://www.bluefly.com/pages/product...u=Produ ct+ID
Inexpensive rayon/spandex with ruffle hem: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/produc...tegoryID=21857
Cap sleeves Betsy Johnson dress, big markdown, though still more expensive than others, but more partyish: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/produc...tegoryID=26359
Cute lace party dress: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/produc...pe=Eve rGreen
Very inexpensive cap sleeve dress: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2912529/...bo=6008190&P=1
While sleeveless, it really covers the shoulders, comes in black, inexpensive: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2885403/...bo=6008190&P=1
V neck kimono style with sleeves (not as dressy but could work): http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2890691/...bo=6008190&P=1 |
