My son's quote: "We had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates." Samuel Clemens

Those black sheets are very forgiving--though I'm quite sure S does wash them--and teal sounds like a great companion color!

D's quote was from Dwight on "the Office": "Whenever I'm about to do something, I think 'would an idiot do that?' And if they would, I do NOT do that thing."

kitkat82-- I hope you get the info you are waiting for (and I hope the news is good) today.

It's still damp here today, so I'm cooking up a batch of steel-cut Irish oatmeal to fortify me for the day. I'll make extra if anyone else needs a bowl.

Thanks, everyone, but to clarify- what inspirational quote did YOU put in an ad (or whatever) as a message to your kid? something like--- "Don't be afraid to go out on a limb... you might enjoy the view" (we used something like that as a msg to older s 4 yrs ago)

Oops, jym--I guess the pirate one doesn't exactly fill the bill!

jym626-- we put in a John Lennon quote.
Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

How about a paraphrase from the same source (Mark Twain)--my Dad said this to each of us when we went off to college--"Don't let college get in the way of your education!"

I love the pirate quote. Also love the Dwight quote. I expect S1 will want to use his favorite Dwight quote, "Am I happy about the way things turned out? Well, happy's such an ugly word." Though it doesn't work as well without Dwight's crackpot smile.

For the parent ad, we did something that wasn't exactly fresh and new, but was definitely true to our D. We used photos of her doing various daredevil things (climbing a tall tree at 3, climbing rock walls at 6, doing ropes courses at 10 and 13, and finally hang gliding at 16*), arranged them in ascending order (diagonally up the half-page), and wrote something like this (although I'm afraid I don't remember the exact words): Never stop reaching higher - we're behind you all the way.

And good morning all! The oatmeal smells delicious, acme. And I'm loving all this happy news about college choices and proms.

*D is a fall birthday so this was more recent at the time than it sounds.

jym,

I used Dr. Seuss' lines with a toddler picture of him, head to toe with no shoes on (yep, with his approval):
Quote:
You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

jym-We used "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow".

Congrats to all the decision makers! Kitkat, I think you have a decision, but isn't it really hard to let the others go? S made his decision awhile ago but I wasn't able to send in the "no thanks" notices until yesterday. I wish he could attend them all.

Thanks for the oatmeal, acme. Hmmm, steel-cut oats - now I know what I've been missing - usually, I just use the packets.

Great quotes everyone - loved the pirates one, bethievt.

Harriet - I love that idea. I wish I was better about keeping up with my pictures!

For the ad, we put in a picture of S with his best friend since age 2--hey, they are dressed up as pirates--poring over a treasure map, with the caption, "It's been one big play date".

At this point, I don't know WHAT would constitute good news. Woke up again at 4 am this morning all in a lather- I just hope the poor kid isn't agonizing as much over this as I am. I realize its all part of growing up - learning that you don't always get what you want, learning how to accept things gracefully, and of course learning how to make the most of your decisions.
