One thing that I didn't like while living in Orange County is the smog...that brown layer that you can actually see in the sky. When we moved to San Diego County, that brown layer disappeared. Oh man, was I actually breathing that brown stuff?!

If you can see the smog, it means that it isn't bad. When you can't see the hills five miles away -- that's a smog day. If you see a band of brown up against the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains, that means that you can see 50 miles and the smog isn't bad that day. For what it's worth, I think the smog is a sign that anyone not born in California should go back where they came from.

I'm a fifth generation Californian too...but I left in the 80's to be with my dh. I don't know if people still do this, though I have no real doubt that they do. Whenever there was an earthquake, people would go into the street after it ended to discuss what Richter # that one was. Down on Point Loma where I used to live, it would usually turn into a party so good that the aftershocks weren't even felt. Shake, rock 'n' roll!
