No, I am Puerto Rican. Father never finished eigth grade, mother did finish high school. Neither was a native English speaker. Dad was enlisted man for 30+ years. Mom worked as a clerk after we were in school. All three children graduated college or more (me MBA and MS, Wisconsin) and enjoy comfortable lifestyles. Sister (BA,art and fashion FIT) works in the fashion world in NYC (x Perry Ellis and Michael Kors, now the GAP-better pay and hours). Brother (BS Rutgers, Physics) is an IT manager at a major company in NJ. Brother now has two kids in college.

Oh yay, a contest on who's had the most disadvantaged life! As if something could be any less meaningful in the context of the issue at hand!

I'm confused about what the different races view as "equality" - are we supposed to treat everyone *the same* or celebrate our *differences" as Rev. Wright suggests?
The two concepts are not mutually exclusive, you know.

Barrons, I was under the impression that there are black Puerto Ricans, white Puerto Ricans, and every mixture in between---same as with Cuba. Same as with America, for that matter.

Just because you are Puerto Rican, doesn't mean you can't be white. Correct me if I'm wrong

Why is it horrible that Rev. Wright says the government is destroying black people with AIDS but perfectly okay for barrons to say the Democrats are destroying black families with welfare?
Because what Rev. Wright is a liar attemping to exploit the stupidity of his followers. What Barrons says is true.

"Democrats have pandered to blacks for decades with strong welfare support and other such programs even though they led to the demise of the AA family."

What can be done? I think that entitlements such as welfare need to be drastically cut, because it leads to such dependence on the government. No candidate seems to touch this.

Does anyone address this problem?

I'd say tan. Or olive. Kinda olive tan. I can get really tan in a few days. I did have one cousin who stayed too long in the Bronx, became a junkie and died. But that was in the late 60's. However today everyone has moved to LI, NJ and all over the country.

The problem with using cutting welfare as a means to the end of reducing government-dependent people who are really just being lazy - an end I support - is that in the process of trying to do that you end up really truly hurting some people who actually need the money, have worked hard, and just had bad luck, or whatever. That is an end none of us want - but it is unavoidable with welfare reform. I guess it depends on your point of view - I'm not totally sure where I fall, but it's really not as simple as "cut welfare and magically every bum will get a good job and become productive while every deserving person won't be hurt".

I live in a rural area where it is very sad to say that I have seem grandmothers, with their children and their grandchildren paying with WIC. In this area it is not uncommon to see that everytime you go shopping. It is a never ending cycle. It is even sadder to hear children take pride in the fact that my Mom had me when she was 15, and thus, it is no biggie in the family that she got pregnant when she was 14. One time last year at my DS's middle school when a child asked me how old I was and I said 42...wow your old, my Mom isn't even 30! Figure it out, her Mom would only be 33 when her child graduates...if the daughter was going to grad., since she was already pregnant in Middle School. I asked how did she expect to survive..."it's okay I'll live with Mom and she will take care of the baby, plus the state will pay for the baby. What about the Dad? He already told me he wasn't the father so I don''t care if he is a part of the baby's life!

Very sad is all I can say, and very uncomfortable to think that they have rationalized how nothing is wrong/abnormal with what is occurring!
