We get tons of credit card applications for S1 in the mail everyday. It seems the companies use the home address rather than the college address. We recently bought a paper shredder and just run it (and all the other junkmail w/our name/address) through and dump it.

You should also definitely discuss with your student exactly what to do if their wallet is stolen/lost. S1 has lost his wallet twice in three years of college. Both times he immediately called the bank/credit card companies to report it and have stops put on the cards. Remind kids to do this right away even before bothering to call Mom and confess that wallet is gone. Someone could be out using all their cards etc. while they are spending time on the phone with you asking for advice and getting phone numbers.

It is not just the outsider who may steal from your son or daughter. My daughter lived in a 6 person suite (2 girls to a room) and one of the suitemates stole the credit card of one girl and cash from another girl. After she was caught (a video camera in a store) using the credit card (over $1000.00) she was only moved out of the suite into another dorm (while continuing to be on scholarship) and wrote to all of the girls saying she was "sorry, but there was so much pressure on her to keep up with the other girls in the suite because they all came from "rich" families who gave them everything they wanted." Sorry, but we are far from rich and our daughter worked her butt off from sophomore year of hs on to save to have spending money.
So, you can buy all of the "safety" devices you want but you still need to be vigilant even in your own room!!!
