Goodbye Songs

Help_please is a new college graduate whose college boyfriend and first love has broken up with her. Her story is in the thread "What do I do?". I thought I'd like to start another thread for her with suggestions of some good songs to listen to that will help her through this time.

I sure wish we could post youtube links! But since, we can't, help_please, go to youtube and do a search for "jo dee" "bye bye" and watch the music video. Here are the lyrics to the chorus of the song "Bye Bye", a country song by Jo Dee Messina:

Bye bye love, I'll catch you later
Got a lead foot down on my accelerator and the rearview mirror torn off
I ain't never lookin' back. And that's a fact.
I've tried all I can imagine
I've begged and pleaded in true lover's fashion
I've got pride, I'm takin' it for a ride
Bye bye, bye bye my baby, bye bye

Can anyone else come up with some songs for Help_Please?

Okay, I'll play.

Gloria Gaynor "I will survive."

Go on now, go walk out the door
Just turn around now
('cause) you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
Did I crumble
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no, not.I. I will survive

.....

It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
Kept trying' hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart,
And I spent oh so many nights
Just feeling sorry for myself. I used to cry
But now I hold my head up high
And you see me somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person still in love with you,
And so you feel like droppin' in
And just expect me to be free,
Now I'm savin' all my lovin' for someone who's lovin' me

How about Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone"?

Here's the thing
We started out friends
It was cool, but it was all pretend
Yeah, yeah, since you been gone
You're dedicated, you took the time
Wasn't long 'til I called you mine
Yeah, yeah, since you been gone
And all you'd ever hear me say
Is how I picture me with you
That's all you'd ever hear me say

But since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
I'm so movin' on, yeah yeah
Thanks to you, now I get what I want
Since you been gone

How can I put it, you put me on
I even fell for that stupid love song
Yeah, yeah, since you been gone
How come I'd never hear you say
I just wanna be with you
Guess you never felt that way

But since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
I'm so movin' on, yeah, yeah
Thanks to you, now I get, I get what I want
Since you been gone

You had your chance, you blew it
Out of sight, out of mind
Shut your mouth, I just can't take it
Again and again and again and again ....

Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think Im gonna cry
Bye bye love
Bye bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could die
Bye bye my love, goodbye

There goes my baby
With someone new
She sure looks happy
I sure am blue
She was my baby
Till he stepped in
Goodbye to romance
That might have been

Chorus

Im through with romance
Im through with love
Im through with counting
The stars above
And heres the reason
That Im so free
My loving baby
Is through with me

Chorus

I always think of this as a Simon and Garfunkel song, but actually it's way older than that lyrics by by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant.

This is the song I wallowed in the first big breakup I had. Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot:

I can see her lyin back in her satin dress
In a room where ya do what ya dont confess
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you been creepin round my back stairs
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you been creepin round my back stairs
Shes been lookin like a queen in a sailors dream
And she dont always say what she really means
Sometimes I think its a shame
When I get feelin better when Im feelin no pain
Sometimes I think its a shame
When I get feelin better when Im feelin no pain

I can picture every move that a man could make
Getting lost in her lovin is your first mistake
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you been creepin round my back stairs
Sometimes I think its a sin
When I feel like Im winnin when Im losin again

I can see her lookin fast in her faded jeans
Shes a hard lovin woman, got me feelin mean
Sometimes I think its a shame
When I get feelin better when Im feelin no pain
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you been creepin round my back stairs
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you been creepin round my back stairs
Sometimes I think its a sin
When I feel like Im winnin when Im losin again

Can't imagine #5 cheering anyone up!

Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" --pay attention to the lyric about meeting him when you were young and naive.

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye on the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that theyd be your partner
Theyd be your partner, and...

Youre so vain, you probably think this song is about you
Youre so vain, Ill bet you think this song is about you
Dont you? dont you?

You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and...

I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and...
Well I hear you went up to saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your lear jet up to nova scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well youre where you should be all the time
And when youre not youre with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and...

Anything by Ryan Adams. Especially, Come Pick Me Up from his first solo album Heartbreaker:

There is a video of him performing the song on Letterman online.

Here are a few:

Billy Joel "And So It Goes"

In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along

Counting Crows "A Long December"

A long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leaving
Now the days go by so fast
And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think that I could be forgiven... I wish you would

Blessid Union of Souls "Last Day" (not the best song ever, but it's has that upbeat/angry/angsty thing going on)

Every minute I’m alone I watch the phone
I can’t believe
It’s so pathetic how my imagination
Gets the best of me
Maybe I’ll phone her up, won’t act grown up
Then she’ll hang up the line
Now I’ll just have to get a life
Yesterday she walked out of my life
She said it was the best for both of us
The other day I was doin’ fine
Yesterday was the last day of my life

Faith Hill "Cry"

If I had just one tear running down your cheek
Maybe I could cope, maybe I'd get some sleep
If I had just one moment at your expense
Maybe all my misery would be well spent

Yeah.... Could you cry a little
Lie just a little
Pretend that you're feeling a little more pain
I gave now I'm wanting
Something in return
So cry just a little for me

Hootie and the Blowfish "Let Her Cry"

And just...
Let her cry...if the tears fall down like rain
Let her sing...if it eases all her pain
Let her go...let her walk right out on me
And if the sun comes up tomorrow
Let her be...let her be.

"Take Me or Leave Me" from the musical RENT

Take me for what I am
Who I was meant to be
And if you give a damn
Take me baby or leave me

No way, can I be what i'm not
But hey, don't you want your girl hot?
Oh, don't fight, don't loose your head
'Cause every night who's in your bed?

Teddy Thompson "I Don't Want to Say Goodbye"

‘Cause I don’t want to say goodbye
Let the sun shine through
No, I don’t want to say goodbye
All I want to do is live with you

Together, our two hearts are strong
Don’t you know that’s where our hearts both belong?

98 Degrees "She's Out of My Life" (this song has really great harmonies, very sad and a bit haunting)

Ooh, she's out of my life
She's out of my life
I don't know whether to laugh or cry
I don't know whether to live for die
And it cuts like a knife
She's out of my life

George Strait "She Let Herself Go"

He wondered how she'd take it when he said goodbye.
Thought she might do some cryin': lose some sleep at night.
But he had no idea, when he hit the road,
That without him in her life, she'd let herself go.

Let herself go on a singles cruise,
To Vegas once, then to Honolulu.
Let herself go to New York City:
A week at the Spa; came back knocked-out pretty.
When he said he didn't love her no more,
She let herself go.

She poured her heart an' soul into their three-bedroom ranch.
Spent her days raisin' babies, ironin' his pants.
Came home one day from the grocery store and found his note,
And without him there to stop her, she let herself go.

Let herself go on her first blind-date:
Had the time of her life with some friends at the lake.
Let herself go, buy a brand new car,
Drove down to the beach he always said was too far.
Sand sure felt good between her toes:

She let herself go.......

I've sung this song and I'll sing it again
Of the people I've known and the places I've been
Of some of the troubles that bothered my mind
And some of the people that I've left behind,
singing:

So long, it's been good to know you,
So long, it's been good to know you,
So long, it's been good to know you
That dusty old dust is a-driving me on
And I've got to be drifting along.

-- Woody Guthrie

And for rebound kids, there's always Dan Hicks' "How Can I Miss You If You Won't Go Away?"

I think some particularly vicious songs may help lighten the mood:

All of Alanis Morissette’s first album, particularly “You Oughta Know”

Dylan: Most of “Blood on the Tracks”, especially “Idiot Wind”: “You’re an idiot babe, it’s a wonder you still know how to breathe”

Fleetwood Mac “Silver Springs”: “I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you.."

Counting Crows: “Get away from me, this isn’t gonna be easy But I dont need you. Believe me, you got a piece of me. But its just a little piece of me. And I dont need anyone"

Fiona Apple “Limp”: “It wont be long till you’ll be lying limp in your own hand”

Ben Folds “Song for the Dumped”: “So you wanted to take a break, slow it down some and have some space. Well f*** you too”

And before Facebook, this would frequently be blasted out of a dorm room window at my college to signal a break up: Nilsson “You’re Breaking My Heart”: “So f*** you!”

I have many, many excellent breakup songs, but most of them are obscene...
