| New York City Hotel
I am visiting my son in NYC in a couple of weeks. He is in the NYU dorms on 14th street. Are there any affordable hotels nearby ( under $300)? I am considering a Marriot that is not too far away. Any more choices? Thanks
I haven't been in NY for many years. |

| You can try this Columbia University Office of Undergraduate Admissions - Accommodations
I will recommend the Union Theological Seminary. It does not have a lot of amenities, but it is cheap; I think about $170 per night. It is also close to the subway station, the 1 train can take you close to NYU.

| Has anyone tried the Pod Hotel yet?
This is not in the NYU neighborhood, it's at E. 51st St. -- so that's "Midtown East"
meaning east of Central Park/Fifth Ave. in general proximity to the United Nations.
It's a new idea in budget hotels, especially if you are alone The Pod Hotel
Perhaps with rates "starting at $119/night" you could take cabs or public transit to his neighborhood. It's a question of money v. time, how do you want to spend yours?
Good luck; I've never stayed there, just read about it. Teeny tiny spaces, just like a real New Yorker. |

Here's a link to a listing of lower Manhattan hotels. The only ones with which I'm familiar are the Marriott Financial Center and the Tribeca Grand. I'm doubtful that either would fall within the under $300 range, though. Prices at decent hotels in the city have really gone through the roof in the past year. | B&B's are another option, if you are willing to give up some big hotel amenities. Our family stayed at Jack and Judy's B&B on the Upper West Side last summer, which was under $200 a night. http://jacksbandb.com/
I've found tripadvisor to be a great resource for hunting for hotels. The manhattan forum is very active, but they expect you to do your homework first before asking questions about what's the best hotel to stay in. | |

| candace: I am a huge fan of renting an apartment when I visit my D in NYC. The last time (early May) I rented a beautiful studio on 51st & 9th Ave (doorman building, rooftop garden, etc.), for $175 a night. Well worth being a bit further uptown than down by where D is. The time before I stayed in the West Village (also a studio apt), and spent just under $180 a night.
Since your time is coming up soon(ish) I recommend (highly) vrbo.com (vacation rentals by owners). There you can sort through the listings, and most have calendars so you can immediately see if a place is available for your dates.

| Thanks for all the great tips. I just sent an email to the vrbo site. I found a one bedroom in the 50s near Lexington that is affordable. All the hotels I looked at were much more. | |

| candace, I don't know how picky you are. For me, I spend no time in the hotel and want the cheapest thing I can for a place for the night. I also have a kid at NYU and in fact, at times, she has also lived in Union Square right where you are talking about. She is there now, in fact, on 14th for the summer. I have stayed several times at Union Square Inn, a boutique inn (not a full fledged hotel....although they offer a continental breakfast), right on 14th at 3rd. The rooms are very tiny but they are clean and the bathrooms are nice. It is a walk up. It costs about $159/night. They have a website and you can reserve online. You would save in time and cab fares as you will be two blocks from that dorm. | |

| Thanks for all the help but I need to postpone my trip to NYC. My daughter changed her plans and no longer wants to come with me. And since my son was home for the 4th, I will see him again in 4 weeks. I am hoping to meet my friend from NJ in the city from Nov 6-10. And an added bonus is that we can split the room cost. I will like the cool weather as a contrast to the Florida heat. | |
