Our daughter used a 2 drawer locking filing cabinet for items that needed to be locked. Pretty handy size--she used the top as a nght stand. I believe it was also used to store off-season clothing items!

metermaid, I tried to get my daughter to do the same, but she is more trusting that I am. I just know how thinks can just get up and walk away! My main concern was her better jewelry and her ADD meds. It turns out, she was right and I was wrong, but I still think having a locked drawer, especially in a dorm, is a great idea.

Would appreciate recommendations for:

- the best memory foam or mattress topper or mattress pad
- the best electric fan

thanks!

My college student LOVES her "feather bed" (but it's hypo allergenic - not the real thing) as a mattress topper. It softens the mattress just right by her standards, allows for some "breathing" and she misses it when she comes home to her regular bed. Yes, it's an XL Twin. She tends to be a warm body. This is at a school that definitely experiences all the seasons.

The fan really depends on the arrangement and window type of the dorm room (at least if one is hoping to bring in fresh air). We did not purchase one until we scoped out the set up, then got the type that fits in the window.

My son wanted a fan, and I found one that is a personal fan that runs on batteries/electricity/rechargeable battery. He can have it directly on him in his room and also carries it to the sometimes overheated practice rooms where there is no outlet.

When we picked up DS from school in May, he mentioned that he had been ridiculed all year by his suitemates for his rock hard mattress. Apparently, I had been remiss in not providing a mattress topper his first two years. Well, we moved him back in this weekend and made up his bed with a brand new fiber fill topper. The thing felt so luxurious I am truly concerned that he'll never get up for class. But wouldn't you know that his bed is once again the subject of conversation-- this time because it's overly comfy

I haven't read this whole thread, so this may be on the list but due to this flu season I'm adding: thermometer.
