pugmadkate, your S is very, very lucky to have such a wise and loving mother. Here's to you - your support is beautiful. And here's to a long and happy life for him, full of the love he deserves.

I feel entirely different. Your brand of Christianity may have an issue with it, mine doesn't. Our minister is gay.
I want my child to grow up in an environment where if she or her children turn out to be homosexual, they are loved, supported and not condemned for being different, for being something they did not choose (just as we did not CHOOSE to be heterosexual, we just are). I want her to grow up in a world where her friends can be the orientation they are, and they are not criticized, laughed at, beaten or threatened. To me THAT is comes closer to Christianity than one filled with hate and condemnation and judgment.

It makes me sad that there are people so filled with hate in this world. I wonder who MiltonMom is voting for??

miltonmom: I agree with you about one thing- this country has gone further than you had thought.
But it is not there yet. I hope some day you and I live to see this country gives homosexuals the same freedoms that you and I enjoy- i.e, to express love when we find people to love and to marry them if we so choose.

I have no idea what was portrayed on Gray's Anatomy. I don't like to see graphic sex (between any two people) on prime time network TV.
I always tape America's Next Top Model for my daughter and Two and a Half Men is on right before it. I don't really watch that show, but since they show episodes on airplanes, I'd assumed it was pretty clean. As I was forwarding the tape to ANTM, I heard the characters talk about going to Vegas and the characters laughed about "the lap dances and the hookers." I have a problem with that kind of sexual reference on a show that is on at 6:30 pm and is viewed as "child friendly." (Of course, the solution is to get Tivo, I know.)

Why was this thread moved from the Cafe to Election and Politics? I know it is controversial, but not every controversial thread is about the election.

I am the world's worst speller, but I would like to point out that the show is spelled "Grey's" not Gray's which is the text book.
I hate it when Hollywood tried to promote its agenda regarding anything.

What is the "gay agenda" anyway? To have jobs, wear nice clothes, fall in love, have sex, buy a house, go out to dinner, watch TV, pay taxes, retire, die surrounded by friends and family? Golly, that sounds just like the heterosexual agenda!
| Ain't that the truth!
Justamom made a great point that I would like to reiterate. There are straight, white people all over TV. As a lesbian, I love seeing relationships on TV that "look" like my relationships, even though the specifics may be very different. This was even more important when I was younger since I didn't know other gay people. Seeing gay people on TV who had accepting families, friends, and healthy relationships was very valuable to me.
I second Harriet, Pug. Your son is very lucky to have a loving, supportive, outspoken mother.

miltonmom, I also live in "main stream America", and like pugmadkate, one of my children is gay. Why is "your" America more main stream than mine? The woman who sits next to me at work is gay, and so is one of the women who is one of my D's scout leaders. The main who is the assistant to the pastor at my church, who made me feel welcome and helped fold me into the church community when I joined, is gay. One of the best computer developers in my workplace is gay. I have had gay neighbors, and gay employees. My "main street" America (and I live in the Midwest) includes gay people that I love, respect, and admire. I will stand up for what I approve of, and that is for Hollywood to show the experience of gay people as well as straight ones. I would like to see more gays depicted in mainstream entertainment, not fewer.

Also whats with the 'gay agenda'- is this like another right wing conspiracy theory? Could it just be it reflects society at large? Maybe not reflective of your particular world, but surely it reflects mine.
What would you say if I told you my D's highschool and the college I teach at has resources that support gay students, and - gasp!- a club for homosexual students? Would you suggest my daughter's school and my college are pushing a gay agenda too?
I know you will be horrified to hear this but welcome to the future to which you will have to come to terms with. But be assured you will and American society will not fall apart. Just like, say, American society came to terms with women having the right to vote or be in the workforce, and it got used to different races sharing marriage, water fountains and buses.

Why is it called an agenda? Is there some thought that Hollywood wants to tempt your kids to be gay? Perhaps it is a recognition that there are lots and lots of gay people out there who might enjoy seeing something that they may have experienced. I know a gay couple who went through something very similar to the scenario on the show. They had fought their sexual orientation for years until they met each other. This was 20 years ago, and they have moved out of town, but I'll bet they and many others are loving the story line. When I see story lines that involve people of faith, I don't think of it as an agenda.

My kind, compassionate, bright, sweet, loving son is gay. He is not a mistake nor mistaken about love and he is not forsaken by G-d.
I cannot describe to you how painful it is to read words like yours. This child is my heart. There is nothing vulgar about his desire to love someone. Nothing.
| Thank you, Pugmadkate. I could have written those words, because my beautiful, sweet son is also gay. And was made that way by G-d.
The only "sin" here is the bigotry that the original poster expresses. It is shameful, and I will never as long as I live allow such bigotry to be expressed without my condemnation.
Forty years ago or so, people expressed equal outrage when the "sin" of an interracial kiss was first shown on television. Someday, I hope the expressions of outrage about things like this appear, universally, to be equally barbaric.

It's not an agenda. It's Hollywood. My sister went to gay/parade for years when she was working near Hollywood. Nobody in our family is gay.
Personally, I don't watch TV so nobody can push any agenda on me.
EDIT: My personal massager is a lesbian. But it is a non-issue to me. I hadn't realize it's an issue until I've heard on radio that teachers spent $1 billion for prop 8.

There are a couple of other parents I know on CC who have gay children. (Edit: Cross-posted with Donna, who was one of the parents I was thinking about!) These parents and kids are living their lives and promoting the "gay agenda" all over America. Perhaps you have had your eyes closed to these families in your neighborhood or workplace, or perhaps if you make your views well-known, some of your friends or acquaintances who are gay or have gay family members haven't felt comfortable sharing that part of their lives with you.

I am far more bothered by shows with violence and torture and gratutitous sex than by a depiction of loving of any variety.
I handle this by not watching violent shows.
