Audit turns acclaim into outrage at Preuss
Review finds extensive grade inaccuracies at charter school

The academic reputation of the nationally recognized charter school at UC San Diego is being called into question by a new audit showing widespread grade tampering and instances where students received credit for courses they never took. >>
I suppose that college acceptances of any students from Preuss up to and including the High Class of 2008 could be suspect, if they were based on inaccurate transcripts.

fireandrain -- I wasn't aware of the case in Cherry Hill, but there was a story about this time last year about six students at Fayetteville-Manlius HS near Syracuse who were involved in a scheme that involved computer tampering with their transcripts, including changing SAT scores. Several of these kids had been accepted by very prestigious colleges. I'm not sure how this was resolved, and the last I had heard none of the colleges had rescinded the kids' admissions.

courer, I don think the boys were in on this. They were good kids. I always thought it was arranged by the dad.
moda, boys went to good schools and got good jobs. (So did I.) I haven't seen either since graduation. One died in a tragic accident about 10 years later. i never considered karmic penalty, though.

The Pennsylvania mom was just unsophisticated. In our local HS, joining the school board is a half-point boost for your kid. Of course the parents of smart kids don't even bother. They just send their kids to private high school. As the old basketball saying goes, no harm no foul.

Be aware that we are only informed of cases where those changing grades are caught. I wonder how often this is done and not caught.

^ I was kind of thinking the same thing. It sure is a gamble though and I for one cannot imagine anything being worth that kind of humiliation. Plus... what does that say about the faith you have in your kid? Boggles the mind.

| Well, it basically tells your kid that the way he really is isn't good enough for your standards, and that the only way he'll ever amount to anything is if Mom or Dad takes it into their own hands and cheats to get the kid ahead.
Great life lesson.

So many parents "hover" about their students today that we only fend shock when we hear these stories. If only we could have the typical CC student so parents will not go to these extremes.

Eggmom's story reminds me of back in the 70s when I was in high school also and wanted to go to college, my grandmother told me that women didn't need an education because we would be out in the workforce taking jobs away from men who have families to support. Thankfully, I didn't listen to her. |

| The thing I don't understand is why parents would change grades or scores to get their children into a "better" school. Is that not setting up your child to fail, assuming they may not be up to doing the work at the higher tiered school?
Seems the parents are doing it for the "keeping up with the Jones'", not for the benefit of the child.

I know a lot of kids in high school that cheated their way to the top. It just sucks- but what can you do?
It is scary though to think your grades can be altered. Quite honestly, now that I think about it- it probably happens a lot more commonly than we think. There are a lot of high schools in the US.

This actually happened in D's HS a few years ago. They couldn't actually prove it but, the mom/staff person was the only one with access. Because the GC left her computer on and unattended and the student's whose grade was changed was the only one whose grade was changed and the mom of the student was the only one in the office at the time, it was pretty circumstantial, but since they couldn't prove it, they settled for accepting the mom's resignation, and the university took back the student's acceptance since the GPA was not what it appeared to be. Sad for everyone but especially the child had no idea and really thought the acceptance was genuine.

Huntingdon, PA. Isn't this the same place where black kids from a nearby summer camp were "uninvited" to swim at a private club?

No, that's Huntingdon Valley, which is outside of Philadelphia. Huntingdon is near the middle of the state.

HudsonvAlly - I thought colleges all want SATS scores sent directly. If a school wont rescind for SATs scores that dont match -- well I find that hard to beleive.
