I thought of this thread when I saw this very well-written article in Wired magazine this month: An Epidemic of Fear: How Panicked Parents Skipping Shots Endangers Us All | Magazine

The author has been getting some really vitriolic hate mail from anti-vaxers.

Finally, my HS senior is getting the H1N1 mist tomorrow. We had to wait until he was eligible for the vaccine. I'll be so relieved. He is having such a busy senior year with all his AP's and apps. He's kind of a "wait until the last minute" kid, and I've been worried he'd come down with the flu two days before a deadline.

Son #1 has not been able to get it at his school. Sons 2 and 3 were able to get it and I am greatful for that. Son #3 got sick 6 days after getting the vaccine and he had only a very mild case. He was informed that although he had the vaccine he was not completly protected yet. Daughter has not been able to get it yet in our home town.

D 2 got her shot yesterday, at a county health dept in rural NC. She had to drive about 20 minutes from her school and wait an hour.

(She has asthma, so I was worried about her getting the flu.)

D1 is in NYC and doesn't look like she will get it anytime soon.

momma-three,

It will take from 10-14 days before 'full' protection is there. That's what it said in the materials distributed when I received my shot.

I am undergoing chemo and am getting both flu vaccines, I have had enough complications and feel debilitated enough without getting that if I can help it. My D who lives with me has gotten both with no side affects, I want my D1 who is at college to get it but both are unavailable she has asthma and I worry. This h1 n1 has had enough fatalities to convince me. plus with my kids traveling out of rhe country this year i dont want them getting sick in a foreign country without me.

My S has gotten both. I was so relieved when he got the H1N1 vax. He has asthma and is prone to complications even when he just gets a cold.

I got a H1N1 shot today, along with my 15 yr. old son. The county health dept. is vaccinating all the schools and they offer a shot to the volunteers (as a nice incentive to help out). I would have volunteered to help anyway but was very happy for the opportunity. My sophomore in college daughter, coincidentally got the H1N1 flumist today at her college. Now if only my other daughter's college would get a supply. I have been looking all over for her but the supply in that part of Florida seems very limited. Her college won't even take a waitlist of names. They just told her to keep checking their website to see if they get any vaccine in. I will also look for her.

Got a recorded message from the school board today saying they STILL don't have a date for vaccinations in our schools. The county is having a very limited program--you have to be a caregiver for babies born after May something, or have a chronic health issue. You need a doctor's note!

It's November...it really is flu season now.

We have a real shortage of H1N1 vaccine where I am at too. One day this week the county health department offered it to those with chronic health conditions. People were standing outside in the rain for up to 3 hours. These are people with underlying health problems! That is just ridiculous. There must be a better system to distribute the vaccine.

A friend of mine, who had a heart/lung transplant 4 years ago was just able to get his yesterday. I can't imagine anyone who belongs more at the top of the list. His doctors seemed to be of little help.

Just got the H1N1 vaccine today. Got the seasonal flu vaccine a few weeks ago. The scene at our hospital was relatively tame and I don't think I waited in line more than 5 minutes or so. My arm is a little sore from the shot, but definitely relieved that I got it

D1 got the shot today at the County Health Dept. in Gainesville Florida. No lines, no waiting, cost of $25. She had choice of mist or shot and chose the shot. I am relieved that she has finally gotten it. Hopefully she will stay healthy while the shot becomes effective (2 weeks).

My arm is really sore from my shot yesterday.

seiclan, thanks for the heads up. My S is in Gainesville for a few months so I'm going to let him know to go to the County Health Dept. and get the shot!
