"Stir of Echoes" with Kevin Bacon is another scary one.

"The Others" -- I love that one.

"Wait until Dark" -- I remember watching that in my teens with a boy I had a crush on. I think I left nail marks on his arm! That's the only movie that made me scream.

"The Shining" with Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. I was freaked out just by the shot of the car on its way up the mountain road. Brilliantly directed by Stanley Kubrick.

I haven't seen Brian DePalma's suspense films in a while (Blowout, Dressed to Kill, Body Double), so I don't know how well they've aged. When they were released 20-some years ago, I thought they were terrific.

"Wait until Dark" - single scariest moment ever, in any film I've ever seen, including the shower scene in Psycho and the "Mrs. Bates?" moment, too.

"Orphan" is very creepy. Not on DVD yet but rental.

The original "Alien".

"Misery," the other good Stephen King horror adaptation.

Another vote for "The Others"

"The Exorcist" really creeped me out.

Won't watch "The Ring". Son watched it when he was an early teenager and couldn't sleep all night. No thanks.

Gotta get that "Wait until Dark" movie...never saw it. Also, "Zodiac" Are either of these gross??

Some of the old twilight zone epsiodes are pretty creepy. As a kid, i watched one where a phone line fell on a grave and the lady kept getting moaning, groaning calls. Ewww.

And how about "Trilogy of Terror" with Karen Black? Three scary stories, all starring Karen. The one with the crazy dolls was my favorite!

I hadn't thought of Zodiac as a horror. Not gory. It's about the Zodiac Killer, and is supposed to be a very accurate portrayal.

"Don't Look Now" is a great scary movie and also has the one of the very best "romantic" scenes.

If you haven't seen "Poltergeist" be prepared for a few scary moments - one in particular.

The original "Halloween" is pretty scary - I knew an Army Ranger, real tough guy, who left the theater before the end.

The 1959 "Haunting of Hill House" is a good old terror film, especially the scene with the 2 women in the twin beds.

"Suspiria" is an older film. I saw it 30 years ago and still think about one scene. Also, "Seven" has some gore, but is very suspenseful.

Lots of movies have startling scenes, but The Ring was the only movie that has really frightened me since I was a little kid.

"Orphan" is out on Megavideo. Not here to do advertisement for them, but I watch most of my movies on that site. A lot of movies are on that site before come out on DVD. D2 watches all of her TV shows on surfthechannel.com. That site is free.

You know, I may just have to rent "The Ring" again - I agree, coureur, it's one of the few really frighening movies I've seen in a long time.

That's not to say I don't love all the other suggestions, though! Seen most of them (some how missed "Nght of the Hunter" and "Suspira", both of which made one of Stephen King's scariest lists.) My office mate recommended "Orphan" also (DVD comes out on October 27th)

Toneranger - I remember watching that "Trilogy of terror" when I was a kid. Loved it! Recently my daughter saw it and couldn't believe how hokey it looked...... although she did admit that the original "Haunting of Hill House" was better than any remake, even though the original was in black-and-white.
