| Looking for Scary Movies!
It's almost Halloween, and I want a GOOD, scary, suspenseful movie.
NOT gory. (no "Saw" movies. No "Texas Chainsaw Massacre."
NOT bloody. NOT sadistic.
Creepy, suspenseful, spooky - those are all good. In particular, I liked "The Ring," "The Gift" (Cate Blanchett as a psychic), the original "Halloween," "Orphanato" (Spanish horror movie), even "The Grudge."
Any suggestions? I have an empty Netflix queue and I want to be scared!

I didn't think it was that scary, What Lies Beneath.
The scariest one I have seen is The Ring. I couldn't sleep with a TV in my room for a few days. I watched it with my brother and his wife. Both my brother and I were freaked out of our mind. It didn't bother my SIL at all.

I'll recommend "Mothman Prophacies"--based on a true story.
There was a good thread on same subject last week entitled "scary"--I'll give it a bump.

Don't Look Now. Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. A classic from the 70's, and the scariest film I've ever seen.

Thanks, all, for the suggestions, and thanks for the thread bump, Ely. I did scan through that list but the movies weren't creepy enough!
I like the Mothman movie, too, but that Ring movie REALLY creeped me out. There's something about that girl crawling out of the TV.
Heck, there's something about crawling, period - any of those movies where there's a person crawling on the floor or ceiling (did anyone see "The Messenger"?) really scares me.
I like the old Hitchcock movies, too, and I did like "What Lies Beneath."

Booklady, I've always felt that way about Don't Look Now, as has my husband. My D, on the other hand, laughs at us about it; I think we over-pitched it to her when she was younger.

I think The Sixth Sense is a masterpiece of creepy suspense, but only if you haven't seen it before. Too obvious?

Mantori, I liked "Sixth Sense" too,.... but it doesn't hold up well if you watch it over and over!
"Wait until Dark" - also good. And now that I think about it, I also watched (and liked) "Shiver" (another Spanish film with crawling people), "The Omen" (original, not remake), "The Haunting" (original, not remake), "The Exorcist", "Blair Witch," and "The Others."

I think there is a generational issue here--younger viewers have more trouble suspending disbelief if the effects aren't realistic enough. My D, for example, didn't really think Psycho (the original) was very scary at all.

| agree. One of the most chilling scenes ever filmed, with the telephone signals. And another jolting moment later that made you jump out of your seat in the theatre
I've seen it more recently and think that its probably too slow paced for today's younger audiences. No special effects.

Agreed about Don't Look Now. Still the scariest movie I've ever seen. If you're planning a trip to Venice in the near future, though, this may be one you want to skip.
Dressed to Kill and Sleeping with the Enemy are two more good ones.

| Zodiac with Jake Gyllenhaal really did it for me. The scene in the basement of the possible suspect had my hair standing on end.
