Remember the ads the sugar lobby created years ago, in newspapers and in broadcast using the voice of actor Eli Wallach? The ads chastized the U.S. soda industry for turning away from cane sugar. I still hear Wallach's gravely voice urging soda lovers to protest and demand that cane sugar be restored to soda. We all know how that worked out.

^^Not "no longer". It is until they settle a "pricing dispute", according to a Costco spokesperson.

But a holiday without cane sugar Coke? If my sober (but Coke swilling) brother finds out, he will never show up for Thanksgiving.

Here is more on the pricing wars between Coca-Cola and Costco:

Quote:
Costco is committed to carrying name brand merchandise at the best possible prices. At this time, Coca-Cola has not provided Costco with competitive pricing so that we may pass along the value our members deserve," said a message on the company's Web site labeled "Price Alert!"

A Costco executive confirmed the move Monday but would not discuss the matter further.

The wholesale club operator, based in Issaquah, Wash., is not removing products like Coke and Diet Coke from store shelves, but it does not plan to restock them "until the matter is resolved," according to the message on its site.

Coca-Cola said in a statement late Monday it won't comment on ongoing negotiations but said Costco is an important customer and that it is committed to working with it "in a spirit of fairness."

Since one of my kids had an allergy to corn products when he was younger, we were always on the lookout for products from elsewhere that used cane sugar rather than corn syrup. We discovered that many Canadian products filled the bill. We don't have a Costco in this town, so I didn't even know Coke with sugar was available.
