With the Iphone you can enlarge the text easily. I use the Iphone if we're in the car without the GPS, but I find it really handy if I'm walking in a city to give me walking directions. It's also handy to download links into my e-mail and then pull them up when I need them away from home.

A few weeks ago I was in NYC with my son. We had only decided to go in the night before and a lot of what I wanted to do was weather dependent. I sent myself google map links to walk or take the subways to different museums/bookstores and the big library. Once we got there it was cold and rainy so we used the google maps to go to the library and then decided to go to the Soup restaurant from the Seinfeld show. We googled the place, found the address and walking directions. (It's closed!) When it was time to go home, we double checked our bus time by looking up the buses website. At some point during the day I realized I hadn't checked on woot.com and bought something I didn't need with my woot! ap. I would have a hard time going back to a regular phone after having the Iphone for almost a year.

I am a total neophyte on these things. If one member on a family plan gets a iphone, how will that change the cost?
YDS, I was an AT&T customer already with a family plan with 3 lines and with the unlimited family texting plan. When I got my iPhone, I was able to remain on the rate plan I already had (which happens to be cheaper than the ones offered today - I was grandfathered in) so the only extra cost to me was the $30/month data plan.

By the way, AT&T is now requiring anyone who gets a smartphone to purchase a data plan, even if they don't plan to use the internet features of their phone.

I have an iPod Touch and I'm quite familiar with MultiTouch. You can make the
font larger but then you have to spend a lot of time scrolling around to read.

At the moment, I have five monitors in front of me. A 17 inch 1280x1024, one
20 inch 1600x1200, one 20 inch 1680x1050, one 17 inch 1920x1200 and one
15.4 inch 1680x1050. I like to have a lot of screen real estate.

My garmin ique 3600 is a GPS PDA and it's usable for walking or use in the car. It's easy to move from vehicle to vehicle. For trips, I usually use Google Earth to plan things on a large monitor so that I can get a feel for the geography and the larger road system. I can also get street or geographical views. One nice thing about having all of the map data on your device is if your web service goes down. Google is known to lose service on their applications from time to time.

Some college classes require a Smart Phone - Auburn for nursing - they have to have access to the Physician's Desk Reference (PDR) during nursing rotations.

Why couldn't you just get the CD-ROM and put it on a netbook?

A straw man is a fallacy in which an irrelevant topic is presented in order to divert attention from the original issue. The basic idea is to "win" an argument by leading attention away from the argument and to another topic.

@YouDontSay -- Yes, that would be $30 per month per iPhone (or any smartphone, for that matter).

constant connectivity? All I can say is if you're like me, once you've gone down that road, you won't be turning back...
I have a blackberry and it is convenient to not have to use the laptop to check email when I'm out of town. I've used it for driving directions when I got lost in LA.
DD has an ipod touch that she can use when she's near internet service and then she has her phone. The iphone is the 2-in-1 that i know she wishes she had. Well, she can have it when she can pay for it...

Mods ... please delete if this is out of line!

You should get a iTouch or iPhone so you can download my H's app from iTunes. It is called PDP8 Kalidascope and it is FREE. And it doesn't really DO anything except kalidascope which might keep a small child entertained for hours if you don't mind them touching your iP.

The reason I post this is that H is looking at his download count and is SO THRILLED that FOUR whole people ... well THREE whole people and me .. have downloaded this silly app. It would make his day if he got a few more hits.

This ends the commercial announcement and you may return to your regularly scheduled posting.

And YES, APPLE does check and certify that it isn't a virus so you don't have to worry about that.

You should post this on an oldtimer's tech forum. It would probably get a lot of interest just for the PDP8.

It is rare I don't have my Blackberry smartphone with me. With the kids needing to be here and there, or needing to let me know they are here and there - it keeps us connected, so I know everything is fine, when they need to be picked up, if there's a problem, etc...emergencies, etc....
But for some fun and an idea of how fun (and addicting) it is to be "connected" all the time, let me share this with you guys ENJOY !!

"Berry addicted"

<<Ok, over the weekend I decided I would take a nap, being the woman of leisure that I am, and just a little tired from getting up at 7am for no specific reason. The house was pretty quiet, and so I layed down but it seems my BlackBerry didn't think I should be taking a nap. I guess it decided if it has to work non-stop, be loyal, consistent and trustworthy, then so should I – how dare I take a nap! I barely got my nap! My little Berry friend alerted me what seemed like every few minutes; which when I'm bright-eyed and bushy-tailed is quite acceptable and even entertaining to me. However, when I was trying to just fit a little nap in, it was somewhat irritating.

Why not turn off the alerts you say? Why not place this dependable monstrosity in another area of my living quarters so that I could just take a simple nap??? Because I am addicted to it. ! - This is my personal Blackberry and not a "work berry" but nonetheless I am drawn to it and must know that to which it alerts me. I put it on “quiet” , but then that red LED of joy beckoned me. And then I began to sit up and just check on the Berry to make sure it hadn't tried to get my attention while I was selfishly napping. Turning off visual alerts just will not do. I mean...you just can't ask me do that, I'm sorry...you can't.

Maybe it's the kids or a friend texting me…… maybe it’s a useless message on Facebook.....maybe that thingy I bought on ebay shipped today......maybe……... ANYTHING !

I love my BlackBerry. I've been told it’s an unhealthy relationship. But what do they know. I'm am so happy to be around those who understand. My name is Shari and I am addicted to my BlackBerry. **cough...sniff** <wink>**>>
