You must be doing something right, mathmom! That's a pretty nice milestone you've hit. Five 5-lb parties!
| Sure, but it took me two years. Most people want to see a faster change. (Even me.)
And I agree Idad, I think the downfall of many diets is that people are forcing themselves to eat too much they don't like. Luckily I like healthy food, and can live without having dessert regularly. (Or limit myself to one chocolate.)

BC:
The selection of long sleeve tech shirts at Marshalls this past winter was limited. Fortunately, I like the adiddas shirts and they always have a selection of those (both short sleeve and long sleeve -- they've got the short sleeves on clearance for $9.99 right now -- in black, white and neon blue). But, otherwise, it was just one here, one there. I picked up a Nike Running long-sleeve, a ASIC, a Mizuno, a C9, and so forth. Fortunately, I don't need as many long sleeves for winter because they can be worn for several workouts. Not like short sleeves in the sweaty summer when it's more likely to be "one and done"!
Marshalls is stocked to the gills with the Nike t-shirts and Pro Combat stuff. They've even been getting the occasional NIKE RUNNING shirt (higher end pieced construction with reflective accents. I've seen them in white and navy (at $19.95) I bought one of the long-sleeve versions last winter. I picked up a fancy pieced neon yellow Nike running shirt with a lot of open mesh ventilation panels for $15. Those things really do come in handy for walking or jogging on roads with traffic or on days with poor visibility.

i-dad.
What do you think happens biochemically when one eats high glycemically (net carb-wise) when one is solidly in ketosis?
How long does it derail the fat burning?
Does it stop the ketosis? for how long?
Does it re-start the storage pathway in a more LT sense?
I am asking this, and realize that it may depend on the person, and exactly what is eaten.
I am still going for max weight (actually fat) loss, and do not want to derail much. But I expect to be doing this weight loss for a good long while ( have many pounds to lose) so knowing what a "treat" of any amount will do is important.
And also knowing how I can live this way (lo to no carb) longer term, to stave off the fatty liver, the diabetes, the cardio-vascular problems, the cancer and inflammation is important to me.
I am aware that I personally tend to gain very easily with carbs, so I have to commit to this permanently, in some form.
Can insulin resistance be reversed as a condition, so as to allow some net carbs without setting up the extraordinary storage pathway?

| Still, 39-year-old folk like us would all be a lot better off losing a pound a month than gaining a pound a month! Those two trend lines lead to very different places!

performersmom:
I never got my carbs low enough to go into ketosis (I just got them a whole lot lower than they had been before!). However, a once a week carb-meal (pasta, pizza, sub sandwich) didn't seem to derail my fat loss. Clearly, I was burning stored fat, without being crazy hungry, and without being anywhere near ketosis (I don't think I ever averaged much under 80 to 100 net grams of carbs per day). So, I'm inclined to think that, for most of us, it's just a continuum. Lower your carbs and you'll lose weight. Lower them some more and you'll lose faster. I also don't think you can beat yourself up over an occasional splurge.
I really don't know if the jump-start effect of the ketosis induction phase is more physiological or psychological in breaking the constant impulse to chow down on mass quanities of carbs???
In the latest Atkins book, Phinney and Volek write at length about finding the level of carbs necessary for each person to lose fat at an acceptable rate and then, later, to find a level that will result in weight maintenance. We are all different. I think Mark Sisson's chart looks about right: http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...urve_color.jpg

Thanks, as usual, i-dad. Have now read the NEW Atkins and the Cookbook for it (had a few too many special purchased Atkins brand items to avoid sugar and flour, unfortunately). Will check out your great links above.
You are a lucky dog that you can lose that way! I would probably GAIN with a diet similar to yours, even with exercise and scaled down for my height!!!
But I definitely will experiment with one dessert a week, and see what happens. I use keto-stix, so I can get a read that way, in addition to pounds and inches and impedance (body comp) changes.
I have never ever been an over-eater, so it has been only about WHAT I eat, so I am stuck with being super- sparing of crabs and not even eating all that much, just often.
Yes, we are all different. But it does pay to ask ourselves the right questions! And to get to know what works for our bodies and temperaments for the long term.

Today is Day 200 of my running streak. One day at a time. Needed a break from the early morning, so ran after work. 77 degrees but not too bad.

Ooooooof. I did interesteddad's ipod nazi's 4-exercise abs workout today. (See Post 16,652.) I was burning in places I didn't know I had muscles. It was very intense, and very worthwhile. Thanks for that video, idad.

MOWC--you go!
I remember reading a fictional book about a runner a long time ago, when my S was doing cross country. People wanted to know what this guy's "secret" to being a good runner was, so they would run with him. Eventually they figured out his secret was running LONG distances. Every day. :/

^LOL That inspired me to go for a short run just as the sun was setting. I really *like* running. It's the being out of breath part that ruins it for me. |

Today is Day 200 of my running streak.
| Thanks to you, I was able to take a day off from exercising because I knew that you would have me covered! I was just plum wore out after yesterday's workout. I can't go jogging. I walked on Tuesday. I'm too sore to do swings and burpees. And, I definitely didn't have the gas in the tank to hop on the Airdyne! Quote: |

| I don't know whether to say, "you're welcome" or "my condolences". I have to tip my hat to anyone who can get through those exercises. Those are all tough. And, they never get any easier; you just get better at doing them.
For example, I'm always sweating and panting by the time I get done with the last reps of that stability ball deadbug -- from an exercise where I'm barely even moving.

I ran 3.5 miles today - my 3rd day of running in a row. Yay, I got a streak of my own going! Sadly, it is going to end tomorrow. We are going to check out what our friendly neighbors up north have been up to, and I dunno if I'm going to be able to squeeze a workout into the schedule densly packed with dining and other such anti-exercise activities.
MOfWC- you go girl! Awesome job.

How tightly are you supposed to squeeze the ball between your arm and leg on the deadbug?
I tried it using just enough pressure to keep the ball from falling, and it didn't seem that hard.

The harder you squeeze, the more it fires the abs. You must have killer core strength if you can hold the leg and arm outstretched for several seconds and not find it hard. I really have to struggle to keep my back from arching up as I tire. The first few reps are OK, once I get to about six per side, I'm struggling.
