You guys have some serious workout budgets.
Well, I guess I do too but I feel guilty about mine.

If there's any place a runner should spend it -- shoes!

A few quick questions for you all experts here:
1. What is the current thinking about cooking oil? I just used the last of my olive oil last night and am wondering what to replace it with. I use oil mostly for sauteing veggies.
2. Is there any way to stop running shoes from squeaking? My daughter bought a new pair of shoes and, according to her, they squeak--which she might not care about except that she worries that other people she runs with will be bothered by it.

We buy olive oil by the half-gallon regularly (my wife does that). I don't think that it's that good for cooking at high-temperatures but I think that she does that anyways. She uses sesame oil too and sometimes soybean oil.
I have been wearing squeaky shoes for a while - due to aftermarket insoles. I put the original ones back in today. Shoes shouldn't squeak - either poor design or a manufacturing defect. Can she return them?

Remember- I get my Brooks shoes at a huge discount, which helps.
My shoes don't squeak. See if she can figure out what causes it- it could be the insoles.

BC, I get my running clothes at the Brooks outlet and Nordy's Rack, which frees up some $$ for shoe purchases. I agree with MOfWC again - running in cheaply made shoes is not a good idea. Another area where I also never cut corners is sports bras (guys, count your blessings ).

I spend a lot on running (and clothes in general....), but it PALES in comparison to what biking costs! My triathlete son just bought $3000 WHEELS for his bike! I don't even want to think about all the money my husband has tied up in bicycles. Running shoes are nothing. I go through shoes quickly, unfortunately, because of a bad way I land on the outside of left forefoot.

MOWC, do you do anything special for insoles? I've got some pretty nice neutral shoes, and I intentionally try not to stride long because I don't want a heavy heel strike, but one heel still gets sore. Should I be looking at finding some kind of cushioning insole or something?

I won't say what I spent on tennis racquets last year and this year but I should be good for the next 20 years.

If I were playing tennis I'd care a lot about what racquet I used, too!

I don't currently use any insoles except what comes in the shoe, but I have used SuperFeet. The first time I used them I didn't like them (felt stiff and hard) but the next time (trying to eliminate some of the hamstring and toe soreness) I liked them better. iDad likes them a lot. You might go to your local running store and see what they recommend. Something like a Spenco insole might help you.

Thanks for the tip, MOWC. I called my local running store to see if they carry Spenco walker/runner insoles and they don't, but the gentleman on the phone asked me a number of questions and was very helpful! He did also let me know where I might find the insoles.

5K walk/jog for me. Twelve intervals to 90% heart rate. Whew, I'm outta shape for this, but it felt good to get sweaty out in the summer sun. For some reason, all the intervals ended up being uphill. I'm planning another hike this weekend. Probably go over and walk up Mt. Sunapee if the weather stays nice.
