teri, OMG, I'm so sorry to hear about this. Keeping my fingers crossed and knocking on wood surfaces that your H will recover soon, and the psychological trauma of going through such a horrible event will heal quickly, too. The incompetence of the acute care docs makes my blood boil!
I know two other people who were saved by their bike helmets, my H's ex-boss and my ex-boss. Both had no recollection of what happened; one was found, just like your DH, on the bike path, and the other was hit by a car...

When I see people riding on main roads without a helmut, I want to pull over and yell at them!

teriwtt that's awful. I hope he heals quickly. I could never be a bike rider, I'm too scared of getting hit by cars.

I've had a bruised/fractured rib and that was painful for a long time. I imagine that he's in a ton of pain. I hope that he heals quickly.
I used to do a lot of bicycling and I never used a helmut - but we cycled in areas that didn't have a lot of traffic. I don't bicycle today because the area where we live isn't conducive (cars and trucks drive too fast).

OMG teri!! I hope he is ok and oh so glad you got him the proper care. Thoughts are with you
And as a person who deals with people with brain injuries for a living, Please-- WEAR.A.HELMET. At ALL times. The gentle bike ride I took on my recent vacation-- I insisted on getting a helment. Their supply was limited but I took one and wore it. There dont need to be any cars around. Stuff happens!

As an ER RN, Amen jym!
The folks that irk me most are parents of toddlers on bikes, toddler wears a helmet but the parent doesn't.
Fun life for the intact surviving kid of the brain injured parent.

Teri- that is horrible and it gave me the chills since H rides so much. I hooe he heals soon and I'm glad they admitted him to keep an eye on things. Just awful. I am seeing more and more people riding the city cruise bikes and they NEVER have helmets. I guess they don't think they count as real cycling? It scares me so much. I had a friend in Dallas who rode over a garden hose and the thin tires slid and she cracked her helmet. People don't understand how easy it is to crash on a bike. I'll admit to being unusually fearful, but.....

I really don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but here's the latest update.
The ortho made rounds early this morning and has recommended surgery for the clavicle since it is displaced more than an inch. He says it will heal better and faster with the screw and plates in. So surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning. The ortho said they recommend surgery for broken clavicles in about 5% of cases, and H just happens to be one of them. So it will mean an extra day in the hospital, which is fine with me, because I get nervous thinking about the bruised lung and want to give it more time to heal before he comes home on my watch.

| That pretty much ensures proper healing and it means that he will be up and around faster with less worries about shifting it out of place during the initial healing. Downside is the whole anatheasia. extra day, etc. He'll be fine!

Good luck to your H, Terwit. Hope he'll recover quickly from the surgery. My H was in a car accident and had a bruised lung. It's painful, but it does heal.
Was traveling all last week and am very proud of myself--I worked out 5 of the 6 days that I was away. Did elliptical machines, treadmill (1 mile--really fast power walk) and a version of the exercise routine that I-dad suggested (as I started doing squats and lunges--I started coming up with stuff on my own. My trainer would have been proud!!)
