thanks for replying MusicMonkey2 - I sent you a PM
It sounds like she has a great list of schools - many are our favorites also. Several have strong music departments. I can't comment on the Dickinson EA decision question.

congrats er111a - we love the North Carolina coast!

TV4caster - Congrats on Clemson - three years ago S1 was accepted to Northeastern with about the same size merit scholarship but just missed the cutoff for the Honors program. They said he could apply after the first semester (I think). I don't know about Clemson though. S1 is attending Vassar as a junior this year so S1 and S2 will both be at the same college for one year.

Hi All, My son has just recently been asked to compete for one of the 10 full tuition scholarships at Xavier University. Has anyone's child gone through one of these interviews/competitions before? Any pointers what they are looking for when they interview?

So much great news from so many -- congratulations to all! My S has heard from 6 of his 9, and got in to all of them so far. Still waiting on his top choice, but it's nice to know he has some really good schools from which to choose. We're especially thrilled about Santa Clara University, and their scholarship package is fantastic. It would be mighty hard to pass that one up.

DS has been accepted to Georgia Tech in BME (which is ranked #2 in the country) and is named as Presidential Scholar Finalist.. He will be visiting ATL in march for presidential scholars weekend. We are still waiting for the ivys and other schools in March. Any insight in to Georgia Tech in comparing with ivys will be really appriciated.
TIA

S doesn't have any acceptances yet, only a deferral from Brown, and I'm getting really, really nervous. I'm so worried that he'll be rejected everywhere, even his safety school! I'm trying to stay positive, but it's really hard....

Maybe send out one more application to a school with a March 1st deadline (such as Purdue) or a rolling admissions deadline. There are some fun schools with later deadlines. Maybe that will ease your stress a bit..hang in there! Keep busy the next 2 days researching a few more schools!

Wow - exciting to hear all the good news on this thread!!!! I saw a couple parents who said D's accepted to Wellesley - my D just got a likely on EE - I am a fan! Also accepted to her safety, Drexel, with $$$. Still waiting on RD at Swarthmore, Boston College, Brandeis, University of Rochester, Vanderbilt and Harvard (not really waiting on that actually - reach).

The waiting is so stressful but having a likely to W has eased my pain quite a bit!

Good Luck to all!!!!!

megan12 and chemusic - That's what we did. Just a couple of weeks ago, we added a few true safeties (we only had one). We have 2 acceptances, but no financial aid or merit. That was enough to send me over the edge with fear!

And, yes megan12, the wait is a LONG one! Chemusic is right - keep yourself busy!

Congrats and best wishes to all!

How do I find the schools with late deadlines and rolling admissions on the east coast?

I doubt that S will want to cooperate - he's so done with applications. I can't even get him to send emails to the admissions people at the schools he's already applied to in order to update them or ask questions. I'm the worried one - he's not worried at all. He's even looking forward to going to his safety school if he has to!

Read all of these great posts----congrats to all of the parents (and kids, of course!) We're waiting, waiting, waiting. D. applied to just 3 universities and won't hear from two of them until mid March. We're a homeschooling family so all of our documentation was extensive. I feel like my 12 years of her homeschooling is under the microscope. I feel like I'm being evaluated as much as my kid! D. had great ACT/SAT scores, impressive extracurriculars, awards, portfolio, glowing letters of recommendation, etc, etc but it's still hard.

Got into U Michigan! They sent my acceptance email and it ended with "How does it feel to be a WOLVERINE?" I got so pumped, I went for a jog around town even though it was snowing out, haha. I also went on an online shopping spree for UM merchandise, as I didn't want buy any before I knew if I had made it or not

Yay2012: Not from personal experience but from a friend's S. He chose Ga.Tech over Cornell a few years ago. He loved it so much that he stayed to do his MSc. He was then recruited by Google and is now working for them in Atlanta. I think the connection with one of the professors there was the dealbreaker for him loving Ga.Tech and staying on to do his MSc.

yayCO2012 - Congrats on your son getting into Tech and becoming a finalist! That scholarship is really competitive; all of my high school friends were competing for it in high school (I grew up in Georgia). I have lots of friends who went there for college.

I'm not really sure you want to compare Georgia Tech to the Ivies, in that sense. It's not a liberal arts environment in the way that the Ivies with engineering schools are; your son will be surrounded by other techies. Even the psychology and language majors have to finish three semesters of calculus and take physics, so nobody goes to Georgia Tech unless they like math and science. The school is also 70% male, and some majors are worse than others (although I think biomedical engineering is probably more balanced than others). And although more and more out-of-state students are going to Tech, the school is still mostly Georgia residents. I don't think he'll find that much of a problem, though, as the whole school doesn't really seem to go home on the weekend - at least not in my limited experience. They're too busy studying.

But of course, it's better than most Ivies when it comes to engineering education, and if your son is really serious about being an engineer Georgia Tech is the place to be. It's also cheaper than most of the Ivies - although financial aid might round that out. With the Presidential Scholarship, though, Georgia Tech would be a great bargain I wouldn't turn down.

Personally, if I knew I wanted to be an engineer I would choose Georgia Tech, especially for biomedical engineering.
