What to get for the dorm room?

Im going to uMich next year, and will be living in Mary Markley. Obviously there are lots of dorm requirement lists and what not but a lot of the stuff just seems unnecessary and excessive. Can any of you provide some insight on what I actually need? Thanks.

Try doing a search here for this question. There are many threads which address this. Maybe someone else with better thread linking skills will link them here for you. There is a ton of good info.

Okay, here is the bare-bones list that DS is taking. He is in a unique situation where he won't have set housing right away, so he just needs a few things;
sheets
comforter
mattress pad
pillow
shower caddy
towel
toiletries
shower shoes
clothes
computer
laundry hamper
hangers
alarm clock
office supplies
messenger bag
money to buy all the things you forgot and to get textbooks

Now depending on your desk/lighting a desk lamp would be good. Surge protectors/extension chords are nice too.

Read this thread

A to Z: What To Bring To College

It has the most complete list that I have ever seen. I copied the list to a spreadsheet, and highlighted only the items that D really needed, and pretty much went by the list.

I knew someone could provide a link!

Here is my free advice...less is more. Dorm rooms are not huge so take only what you need. My son says that half of what you THINK you need you will not use!

Be sure to have all necessary cables for electronics; read packaging on any new gadgets that might require batteries or other assembly to make them operational. Finding out that you need something during the room set up will necessitate an annoying last minute trip.

bchan1 & thumper 1 are right!

Be sure to save all receipts so you can return things that didn't fit (eg, dorm door was too thick for the overdoor rack we bought) or wind up being unnecessary.

Bring coupons for toiletries etc. Worth the hassle when spending so much money!

I just noticed for the first time on a campus website that some washing machines there require the HE detergent so clarify that before you buy any.
