Something to think about in terms of the University of Alabama. They give out a lot of scholarship money but sometimes other schools in the country have lower OOS tuition and have generous scholarships for out of state students. For example, Grand Valley State University in Michigan has an out of state tuition rate of $14,568 per year. It has been ranked as one of best public regional universities in the Midwest and and "Up and Coming school" in the Midwest. The in state tuition rate is $10,078 per year. Also, if you have a 3.5 GPA and 26 ACT and are an OOS student then GVSU will give you in state tuition plus $1500. That would bring the tuition down to $8578 a year for an out of state student, which is lower than most states in state tuition. That scholarship is a lot more generous than Alabama's $1500 a year with an out of state tuition of roughly $23,000 a year at Alabama.

russgenious - S did not consider UAB or UAH, he wanted more of a traditional school environment. He really thought the honors college at UA would give him the best of both worlds - a smaller, more personalized and challenging experience, but access to the resources and school spirit of a large state flagship. I believe the scholarships are slightly more generous at UAB and UAH though.

There is a thread on the UA board right now discussing the differences between UA and UAB. I'm not sure how to link it but it is on the first page of UA's forum.

My dd received her first acceptance phone call today and they said the letter would be forthcoming. Nothing prepared me for how proud I felt today.

She was accepted into Anderson University, a private liberal arts college. It's not her #1 choice but it's a good one and I am so happy to have one acceptance!

Congratulations to all who have received acceptances! My D got her first acceptance today: Coastal Carolina University! She still has to do her interview/portfolio review for the theatre department, but it feels great to know she has one acceptance already!

My D was accepted at St. Mary's with a $12,000 per year merit award, St. Ambrose with a $10,000 year merit award, Eastern Illinois University with $2,500 year merit, Illinois State University (waiting on merit info), and University of Wisconsin Whitewater (waiting on merit info). We have not heard from her "dream school" Loyola University of Chicago.

UW Whitewater is most realistic first choice due to location (1.5 hours away). OOS cost about same as in state IL schools. My D loves the campus. But all depends on financial package.

She's done applying for schools and is now working on scholarship applications and retaking the ACT.
